Obituary

George was born August 9, 1926 in Evanston, Illinois to Gustav and Sarah Elizabeth Strom  He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Robert Leroy and wife Sherle, John Edward and wife Shirley, James Lee and wife Ruth and his sister Virginia Jane (Pat) Fitzgerald and husband Bill.

He graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1944 and joined the Army Aircorps.  He told his CO that he wanted to serve in Europe and did so until the end of WWII. After the war he worked for Washington National Insurance Company where he met Darlene Jean Rogers.  He became a fireman for the Evanston Fire Department in 1950 and he and Darlene were married November 17, 1951. While working as a tillerman George earned the rank of Captain and retired in 1981.

Throughout his life George enjoyed the outdoors, having spent many summer weekends, Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays at his family home at  Wonderlake, Illinois with his siblings and their families.

In August of 1992 he and Darlene moved to Flagler Beach, Florida to avoid the harsh winters.  Darlene passed away in 1997.

Dottie Allard built a house in Flagler Beach to be near her daughter.  The home backed up to Georges property and they began talking over the fence.  Dottie recalls that all she could see was the top of Georges white hat. They eventually met in person, had drinks, had dinner, took rides along The Loop and danced to their favorite Big Band music at Top of Daytona.  They were married June 26,  1998 in Flagler Beach.  They moved to Crane Lakes in January 2004.

George enjoyed many trips to the golf course. Riding his “Dottie and George” Club Car, he would check out the happenings at the Club House and golf course.  It was there that he shared the joy when his grandson Cody got a hole in one.  He was very proud of Cody who attends MMI in Orlando.

George is survived by his wife Dottie, daughter Bonnie Strom, grandson Cody Strom, Dotties three children and spouses and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. His niece Reverend Pamela Jensen officiates at his service.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be received at the Crane Lakes Country Club Pro Shop for a memorial event to be held in George’s honor.

A Memorial Service celebrating the life of George will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Crane Lakes Country Club, 1850 Crane Lakes Blvd., Port Orange, FL 32128.
