Obituary

Lindsey Saunders Perkins, III, died at Cornerstone Hospice on February 22, 2017.  He struggled with autism all his life.  Born on May 15,1937, he was the beloved son of Hazel Clark Perkins and Ralph Parker Perkins.   His father grew up in Pine Castle.

Lindsey graduated from Central Michigan University in 1961 and earned a PhD in Mathematics from University of Michigan in 1970.  After teaching three years at SUNY Buffalo, he spent most of the rest of his life in Orlando.  He took computer courses at University of Central Florida.  He had some short-term employment in math and computer related fields.  He was a shrewd shopper.  He liked puns, music and using his computer for research, art, and games. He knew and expressed opinions about many subjects.

He is survived by his sister, Nancy (James) Dast and two nephews, Peter (Jane) and Steven (Laura) Dast.

We all appreciated members of the community who accepted Lindsey and the people who worked with him and his family over the years, with special thanks to those involved this past decade.

I remember Lindsey and it was on a complete lark I discovered his obituary. He was working on his graduate degree at UM and was often at the old Mental Health Research building on Ann St., which housed some of the campuses mainframe computers. I would go to the MHR Annex after school, as my mother was a research assistant there. I was around 10 years old when I met Lindsey. He always made time to talk with me when I was hanging out in a large sitting room reading. The memory of him and his genuine kindness has always been with me.
