Obituary
Phillip Lee Johnson, 69, Port Orange, Florida passed away on April 25, 2017 at the Halifax Health Hospice SE Volusia Care Center, Edgewater, Florida. He was born on November 18, 1947 in Canton, Ohio to the late Robert Louis Johnson and Elizabeth Lacey Johnson. Phillip graduated from the University of Akron with a Master’s Degree in Education. He worked as a Middle School Teacher at Lake Local Schools in Uniontown, Ohio, retiring after 32 years, where he also coached football and basketball. During retirement Phillip participated in numerous mission trips to Haiti and Costa Rico with Sanlando United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Stark County Coaches Association, the Ohio Education Association, and the National Education Association. Phillip was named Stark County Assistant Coach of the Year, and he was also an Eagle Scout. Phillip is survived by his loving wife of 47 and a half years, and friend of 50 years, Melynda Johnson of Port Orange, Florida; sister, Judy DeMarco and her husband John of Portage Lakes, Ohio; niece, Jennifer DeMarco Buchholz and her husband Ian of Kalamazoo, Michigan; nephew, Robert DeMarco of Portage Lakes, Ohio; nephew, Russell Masters and his wife Shellee of North Canton, Ohio; sister-in-law, Cheryl Johnson of Columbus, Ohio; brother-in-law Jerry Masters and wife Diane of Hartville, Ohio; niece, Tracy Johnson Turley and her husband Dave of Thousand Oaks, California; niece, Lori Schupp and her husband Herb of Lewis Center, Ohio; and seven great nieces and nephews. Phillip was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Larry Johnson. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are in the care and trust of Baldwin Brothers Funeral & Cremation Society, Port Orange, Florida. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Sanlando United Methodist Church Mission Society 1890 W State Road 434. Longwood, FL 32750, in Phillip’s name.
