    Simon,

We first met at the University of Aberystwyth in 1980. Your excellent language skills were quickly evident to me alongside your fierce passion to know and understand the past.

After your graduation we continued to correspond, meet up, or stay at your home periodically as your academic career took you to Cambridge, then onto Exeter, and now UCF. When we met or emailed each other we could always pick up on previous threads or start new ones and enjoy wide-ranging discussions.

Such easy and relaxed friendships that endure are rare and precious. Fate was cruel indeed to take you so soon in life, and so abruptly. My shock and sadness at your passing is profound. RIP my friend.

He will forever be in my heart. He was a mentor and a source of inspiration for me and most importantly a friend. He guided me in so many ways and taught me so much. I had the privilege of researching for him the fall semester for the 3rd edition of his book and still remember our last conversation before winter break in his office. I cant believe a week later he would be gone. I imagined one day in the future we would have lunch together and joke about our classes as professors... It has been a hard night finding all of this out. I will never forget you and you will always be in my heart. I promise. I will always miss you.

Simon Barton was a truly inspiring lecturer and teacher. It was my privilege to be taught by him during my final undergraduate year at Exeter, Simon's first at the university. He will always be remembered, and with great fondness.

Simon was one the finest men and scholars I have ever met. Though his time at the University of Central Florida was brief, he made a deep impact on all of us. We will all miss you terribly. I cannot believe I will never see you again. I will never forget you.

You were a great mentor and friend. I am so sad to see you go. I will do my best to follow your example, Dr. Barton.
