Obituary

Christopher, Susan age 66, caring mother and grandmother, adored wife, and source of warmth and fun to all who crossed her path, went to her Lord on March 18, 2017. She was a vibrant woman who cared deeply for others and touched many lives. She loved to travel, entertain friends, stay in shape, and celebrate everything, especially holidays. Her themed events always proved to be over-the-top! Susan felt deeply for others, human or animal. Her heart went out to those in need, including multiple rescue dogs, cats, and even an orphaned squirrel that she made a pet. Whether in years of distance running, tennis competition, working out at the YMCA, or walking her dog in the park, Susan seldom encountered a stranger she didn’t soon convert to a friend. Her passing leaves a hole in our hearts, but we cherish all the memories she left. She is survived by husband Don, daughters Tiffany (Sandy) McArthur and Joanna (Lt Cdr Matt) Willette, and grandchildren Reed, Lucy, Adeline, and Tucker. Her parents, Joe and Lucille Felix and her sister Barbara Brod preceded her in death. Susan met Don during a summer in Tampa, they later married in August 1979, and began their family in Winter Park. Motherhood thrilled Susan, who unreservedly immersed herself in the role. In enthusiastically supporting the girls’ varied activities, planning scores of family vacations, offering the two guidance throughout college, and then helping as they had their own children, Susan showered her daughters with love. She was her family’s source of unceasing strength and motivation. Even more exciting for Susan was life as “Mimi” who proudly brought joy to her grandchildren, although her house ended up looking at times like a tornado ravaged toy store. After growing up in Ridgefield, Connecticut, Susan received her education degree in 1973 from the University of Florida. Her inspired and fun-loving brand of instruction enlivened elementary classrooms in South Carolina, Colorado, and Florida. While raising her girls, Susan earned a master’s at UCF. She then worked as an adjunct professor at Valencia Community College and served as educational director at Goodwill. Once her girls were in college she switched and became a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines. What a perfect fit that turned out to be for her caring, vivacious, friendly and oftentimes mischievous personality that brought smiles to passengers’ faces. She loved her practical jokes! Active in Asbury United Methodist Church for over 30 years, Susan’s memorial service is scheduled for 4 PM, Thursday, March 23 at 220 West Horatio Avenue in Maitland. The family will receive visitors afterwards in their home at 1501 Indian Dance Court. Thank you to the many friends who have been so supportive while Susan struggled with her cancer. We will always carry her in our hearts and remember a verse she cherished- Don’t panic, I’m with you. There is no need to fear for I’m your God. I’ll give you strength. I’ll help you. I, your God, have a firm grip on you and I’m not letting go. (Isiah 41:10)
