“In Her Words”

Joy Alexander McGratty was born August 4, 1948, and passed away at age 77 on October 24, 2025, surrounded by her family at her home in Maitland, Florida.

She was born in Charlotte, N.C. to Bill Alexander and Doris Stansell. She grew up in Brevard County, Florida and attended Cocoa High School where she graduated in 1966. She attended Brevard Junior College and then Florida Technological University (now UCF) where she graduated in the first graduating Class of 1968.

Since the school was new, everything was a first. She was the first ATO little sister and in the first pledge class of TYES, a local sorority, now Pi Beta Phi. After graduation she became a physical education and science teacher at Sanford Middle School.

She met her future husband on campus in business class. She proposed to him on Christmas Eve in 1970 and they married in June of 1971. She taught for three years before settling down to start a family. Her daughter Hope was born in January1974, her son Brian was born in February of 1976, and her daughter Meagan was born in April of 1980. She loved being a mom and attending all the kids’ sporting events.

Joy was an avid tennis player for 50 years and a captain for many of those years, as well as on the Gold League Board. She started playing pickleball later in life and loved it.

Joy loved parties, holidays and especially Halloween. She loved telling jokes before they offended everyone. She was not afraid to make herself look foolish at times.

Joy never met a dog that she did not love. She loved dogs better than most people and she cared for many dogs throughout her adult life. She had five dogs throughout her married life and loved them all dearly.

She loved her Book Club girlfriends as well as the many friends she met through tennis and other aspects of her life. She also loved yard work and doing puzzles.

She was the oldest of six children and is survived by her sister Hope, brothers Bill (Donna), Weege (Carm), Mike, and Tommy (Beth). She is also survived by her brother-in-law Paul McGratty and sister-in-law Elaine Fitzgerald. She had many nieces and nephews she adored as well as cousins throughout North and South Carolina.

Joy leaves behind her husband Jerry of 54 years, Hope McGratty (Tyler Jones), Brian McGratty (Sally McGratty) and Meagan McGratty Hackley, (Keith Hackley). She also leaves behind the loves of her life, her four grandchildren: Alex (24), Ryland (22), Brody (18) and Leighton (16).

A funeral mass will be held at St. Margaret Mary Church, Winter Park, FL on Saturday November 15, 2025, at 10:00am followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. She requested that everyone wear bright colors to honor her spirit. For those unable to attend the fuenral mass will be live streamed at Joy’s funeral will be broadcast at:   https://stmargaretmary.org/

    To All of Joy's family,
We are very saddened to learn the sad news of Joy's passing. I know her battle with cancer was a long and difficult one. She was one of my classmates at Cocoa High School and then we both taught Physical Education. Joy was always such a delight She literally lit up the room when she walked in. Her smile radiated the joy that was her name. It was so wonderful to reconnect with her at the CHS class of 66 reunions and ladies luncheons. May the wonderful memories you all share bring you peace in the coming days. Hugs and prayers, Elaine Merritt, Titusville, FL (CHS class of 1966)

Her parents sure named Joy correctly, because she surely was a Joy! She lit up a room when she walked in. So sad to learn about her passing. Sincerest sympathy to Jerry and her family.

Joy was a special person that loved life. She had such a quick wit. Joy brought laughter wherever she went. I am thankful that I was lucky to have Joy bring “joy” to my tennis world. She was not only beautiful on the outside, she was beautiful on the inside as well! She will be missed and remembered by many! ❤️

Joy was one of the good ones. Big personality, always a big smile for you. Our family arrived in the Winter Park area in 1975, and met Joy, Jerry, and the Mc Gratty kids then. My first wife, Peggy, taught English at St. Margaret School for 25 years, and I believe taught all 3 McGratty children English. My daughter, Kerri, and Brian were in the same class, and have remained fast friends ever since then. Brian was definitely a favorite of Peggy's , but the McGuires were big fans of the entire McGratty family. I am sure heaven is a bit more animated today with the addition of Joy!!

I only had the opportunity to spend time with Joy for the past 10 years in which we were on a tennis team together. But evidently, she played on a team with my mom 25 years ago. I can’t imagine the two of them together since they both were very witty and will be the entertainers in heaven together now. She truly was a very special person.

Aunt Joy was such a bright light for the many people that knew and adored her — full of life, laughter, and love. She had the most beautiful spirit, the life of the party with her dancing, humor, and that unmistakable heart of gold. She somehow even maintained her sense of humor during her battle with cancer. One impressive lady. She is greatly missed, but we look forward to celebrating her incredible life soon. May her memory be eternal ❤️ Erin

Joy was so special, not only to me (Dale) as a long time friend (since junior high & worked together at Belk’s) but to anyone who entered her orbit! Cheerful, witty, pretty and a friend to all! It was always a treat for us to see Jerry & Joy when they came to North Georgia or when we were in Orlando and got to see them! She will always be remembered by us….may she rest in peace,
