Obituary
Aldine “Mark” Guthrie of Lake Mary, FIorida passed away November 19th, 2023. Mark spent the last 5 years courageously battling a rare nerve disease.
Mark was born in Greenville, SC to Harriett Hayes Guthrie (pre-deceased) and Aldine Kieffer Guthrie, PHD. Mark has an older brother Alan Hayes Guthrie of Clemson, SC, and younger sister Mari Michelle Guthrie (pre-deceased).
Mark graduated from John T. Hoggard High school in 1977; the University of NC at Chapel Hill (BA degree 1981); and The University of NC at Wilmington (MBA 1988).
In addition to his father and brother, Mark is survived by his wife Margie Beane Guthrie of Lake Mary, FL; Sons – Erik Eugene Guthrie of Wilmington, NC and Jonathan Hayes Guthrie of Sugar Hill, GA; Daughter Stephanie Guthrie Herion (spouse Bobby) of Wilmington, NC; Step-son Benjamin Craig Sibley,II (spouse Tori) of Mint Hill, NC; step daughter Mary Sibley Baldwin (spouse Evans) of Winter Park, FL; Grand Children – Easton Hayes Guthrie of Sugar Hill, GA; Benjamin Cassius Sibley and Tinley Pearl Sibley of Mint Hill, NC; Palmer Sibley Baldwin of Winter Park, FL; and Hugh Mark Herion of Wilmington, NC.
Upon graduating from UNC, Mark began in the summer of 1981 what would become a phenomenal work career.
Marks first 32 years post Chapel Hill were with the General Electric Company. When he left GE in December, 2013 on an “early” retirement, he was leading GE’s Global Personnel Relations Team as a Member of GE’s Labor Relations Team. After GE, Marked owned an employee labor relations consulting group. He spent 2 years with Keurig-Green Mountain Coffee Roasters as VP of HR for Global Operations. In addition, he spent 2 years at Hertz Global Holdings where he served as Senior VP of HR for the North America Operations as well as interim Chief HR officer at the time of his retirement from Hertz in October 2020 due to his nerve disease.
Mark had never ending support for the Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Braves, UNC Tarheels and Team USA. He claimed to be the biggest Earth, Wind and Fire fan on the planet; and is remembered for his love of chocolate (from peanut M&Ms to chocolate martinis) his love for dogs (especially Marshall) and the ocean.
Most importantly, one will think of Marks love for his wife Margie, his children, grandchildren, friends and colleagues. Also how Mark positively impacted so many people in his world as a teammate, coworker, colleague, mentor, boss, leader and friend.
Mark indeed lived a life of significance and he tried to take care of everyone around him to the best of his abilities.
In lieu of flowers, Mark would appreciate those able to please consider a generous donation in Marks name to Paws Place Dog Rescue: PawsPlace.org
