Obituary

Alexander S. Mariano, of The Villages, Florida, passed away on 10/28/2022 at the age of 69. Alex is survived by his loving partner of 24 years, Edward Keiser; his daughter Jessica Mariano; Ed’s son Brendan (Ashley) Keiser and grandsons Hayden and Dawson Keiser. He is also survived by sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law in NY, as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine Hickey Mariano, and brother Daniel Mariano. He was born in Queens, NY, and moved as a child to Islip Terrace. Eventually he settled in Shirley, NY.

Alex taught in several parochial schools in Long Island prior to starting his teaching career at Center Moriches High School. He taught middle school math for 30 years. In addition, for 20 years, he directed the annual school musical as well as dramas put on by the Drama Club. He was a parishioner at St. Jude’s RC Church in Mastic, serving as VP of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, where he was dedicated to helping families in the area obtain food, assistance with their bills and furniture.

Alex retired to The Villages with Ed in 2013, giving him the opportunity to explore new interests. Golf became a favorite social event, playing weekly rounds with friends. Expanding his creative side, he designed stunning pieces of pottery with his pottery club. Alex found much joy in socializing with friends, playing trivia, participating in dinner clubs and game nights, and riding around in the golf cart. With an immense passion for music, he took up playing the ukulele, entertaining friends and family, along with local nursing homes and clubs with fellow ukulele players. He “graduated” to the guitar, taking lessons, and joining a club where he would play folk songs with others who played a variety of instruments. “Jam” sessions with his daughter brought him incredible joy. Alex attended the United Church of Christ in The Villages, having a leadership role in the Diaconate and becoming Vice-Moderator. He was an involved member of the Sumter County Democratic Club.

Alex enjoyed traveling and cruising and spending time with family and friends. He was a wonderful Poppy to Hayden and Dawson. His infectious smile and laugh would light up a room. Anyone lucky enough to know Alex was blessed by his compassionate and thoughtful nature. He was a gentle and sensitive soul who cared deeply about integrity.

In remembrance of Alex, give a hug to those you love and give a random smile to a stranger. Also, listen to either a Beatles, Beach Boys or Kenny Loggins song and know that he is listening with you. Arrangements entrusted with BALDWIN BROTHERS Funeral & Cremation Society-Spanish Springs, 352-480-5959. Sentiments are encouraged at www.baldwincremation.com.

Thank you for all you have contributed. It was my pleasure being your substitute teacher in 1996- 1997. Your 8th grades were quite the crew. You had them prepared and ready to work, even with a substitute. REST IN POWER !!

Al, Mr. Mariano you were my mentor when I started at the middle school. Besides showing me the "ropes" of teaching the craziness of middle school students, you showed me a side of teaching most people dont take the time to notice, compassion. Over the years you became a good friend besides a mentor and I cherished those days. Rest in peace my friend. You will be missed greatly.

It seems like just yesterday we were going to Uncle Al’s house for Thanksgiving dinner. Uncle Al was a fun loving , thoughtful and very entertaining Uncle. All the kids in the family loved his plays and playing family games during family gatherings with him. One of my fondest memories was going to the Old Bethpage Village and Restoration with my Uncle Al and Aunt Geri during Christmas time. Every time I have been there since, I think of them. He will remain in the warmest place in all our hearts.

I had the very good fortune to meet Alex and Ed when I purchased their former home in The Villages and they were both gracious and humorous & kind. I was truly sorry to learn about Alex's passing. He will be mourned and missed by many, but his memory will flourish in the hearts & minds of everyone who loved him, especially his devoted partner Ed.
