Obituary
Alexander S. Mariano, of The Villages, Florida, passed away on 10/28/2022 at the age of 69. Alex is survived by his loving partner of 24 years, Edward Keiser; his daughter Jessica Mariano; Ed’s son Brendan (Ashley) Keiser and grandsons Hayden and Dawson Keiser. He is also survived by sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law in NY, as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine Hickey Mariano, and brother Daniel Mariano. He was born in Queens, NY, and moved as a child to Islip Terrace. Eventually he settled in Shirley, NY.
Alex taught in several parochial schools in Long Island prior to starting his teaching career at Center Moriches High School. He taught middle school math for 30 years. In addition, for 20 years, he directed the annual school musical as well as dramas put on by the Drama Club. He was a parishioner at St. Jude’s RC Church in Mastic, serving as VP of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, where he was dedicated to helping families in the area obtain food, assistance with their bills and furniture.
Alex retired to The Villages with Ed in 2013, giving him the opportunity to explore new interests. Golf became a favorite social event, playing weekly rounds with friends. Expanding his creative side, he designed stunning pieces of pottery with his pottery club. Alex found much joy in socializing with friends, playing trivia, participating in dinner clubs and game nights, and riding around in the golf cart. With an immense passion for music, he took up playing the ukulele, entertaining friends and family, along with local nursing homes and clubs with fellow ukulele players. He “graduated” to the guitar, taking lessons, and joining a club where he would play folk songs with others who played a variety of instruments. “Jam” sessions with his daughter brought him incredible joy. Alex attended the United Church of Christ in The Villages, having a leadership role in the Diaconate and becoming Vice-Moderator. He was an involved member of the Sumter County Democratic Club.
Alex enjoyed traveling and cruising and spending time with family and friends. He was a wonderful Poppy to Hayden and Dawson. His infectious smile and laugh would light up a room. Anyone lucky enough to know Alex was blessed by his compassionate and thoughtful nature. He was a gentle and sensitive soul who cared deeply about integrity.
