Obituary
Capt. (retired) Alton Linwood Powell III, M.D., 87, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at the Mayflower Health Care Center in Winter Park, Florida. He is survived by his wife, Betty, and their children, Skip, Betsy (William), and Jeff (Jayne), and grandchildren, Elizabeth and Matthew.
Born in Richmond, Virginia, he was the son of Alton Linwood Powell, Jr. and Edith Mosmiller Powell. He attended elementary school and Handley High School in Winchester, Virginia. He attended The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in Charleston for two years and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1950. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1954 and then was deferred by the Navy to pursue his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1958 and served at various bases, including NAS Port Lyautey in Kenitra, Morocco where he delivered his daughter, Betsy in 1962. He later assumed command of the Naval Regional Medical Center in Orlando, Florida, in 1975.
After his retirement from the Navy in 1978, Al worked at the Student Health Center at the University of Central Florida for eight years. He and Betty then moved to Fripp Island, South Carolina, in 1986, where they enjoyed retirement by the ocean. Al was very involved in the church, serving as chairman of the Building Committee for Sea Island Presbyterian Church, where he participated in the choir and was an Elder Emeritus. Al and Betty moved back to Winter Park, Florida, in 2011 to be near their children.
His passions included investing, playing golf and tennis, gardening, watching college football (Go Noles) and in later years reading, music, riding his bike and walking to enjoy nature.
