Obituary
Ann Griffin Blackwood passed away peacefully on June 17 after a long illness. Ann was born on September 20, 1934 in New York City to Catherine (Lennon) and Harold Griffin.
Ann devoted her life to education, working for the Mount Vernon, NY Board of Education for thirty-four years as an elementary teacher and math specialist. She and several of her fellow teachers enjoyed lifelong friendships.
In 1978 Ann married the love of her life, Ronald A. Blackwood. She tirelessly provided support and assistance during her husband’s tenure as mayor of Mount Vernon. She was a gracious and caring First Lady of the city.
When Ann and Ronald retired to New Smyrna Beach, Ann volunteered as a tutor. She also continued her role as partner and supporter as Ron became involved as a mentor and active member of Rotary, Habitat for Humanity, Marine Discovery Center and other organizations. Ann enjoyed playing bridge and canasta with her friends at Smyrna Yacht Club. She also completed the New York Times crossword puzzle in record time every Sunday.
Ann was predeceased by her husband in February, 2017. She is survived by her sisters
Jane Byrnes O’Neill and Dorothy Griffin Kelley, brother-in-law John Kelley, step-daughter Helen Blackwood, eight loving nieces and nephews and fourteen grand nieces and nephews. Her family wishes to thank the staff at Fairgreen Assisted Living Facility and Vitas Healthcare for their loving care of Ann over the past three years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 4000 South Atlantic Avenue, New Smyrna Beach at 11am on Saturday, July 14. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Human Service Ministry at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church.
