Obituary

Ann Griffin Blackwood passed away peacefully on June 17 after a long illness. Ann was born on September 20, 1934 in New York City to Catherine (Lennon) and Harold Griffin.

Ann devoted her life to education, working for the Mount Vernon, NY Board of Education for thirty-four years as an elementary teacher and math specialist. She and several of her fellow teachers enjoyed lifelong friendships.

In 1978 Ann married the love of her life, Ronald A. Blackwood. She tirelessly provided support and assistance during her husband’s tenure as mayor of Mount Vernon. She was a gracious and caring First Lady of the city.

When Ann and Ronald retired to New Smyrna Beach, Ann volunteered as a tutor. She also continued her role as partner and supporter as Ron became involved as a mentor and active member of Rotary, Habitat for Humanity, Marine Discovery Center and other organizations. Ann enjoyed playing bridge and canasta with her friends at Smyrna Yacht Club. She also completed the New York Times crossword puzzle in record time every Sunday.

Ann was predeceased by her husband in February, 2017. She is survived by her sisters

Jane Byrnes O’Neill and Dorothy Griffin Kelley, brother-in-law John Kelley, step-daughter Helen Blackwood, eight loving nieces and nephews and fourteen grand nieces and nephews.  Her family wishes to thank the staff at Fairgreen Assisted Living Facility and Vitas Healthcare for their loving care of Ann over the past three years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 4000 South Atlantic Avenue, New Smyrna Beach at 11am on Saturday, July 14. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Human Service Ministry at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church.

My heart is saddened with the news of our dear Ann's passing into the arms of our lord Jesus Christ. I will Treasure All of my memories of Ann and Ron from the SYC and also OLSS. This Couple Glowed xo and I admired them so much. They once asked me to help with one of the children parties (Easter Bunny Time) at the Club and before you know it they were actually my mentors and since then have enjoyed continuing their legacy with the little people parties at SYC. Ann was an asset to the SYC Ladies during her terms on the Ladies Board and when I became part of the Ladies Board she gave me her uniform xo and believe it or not when I finished my time passed it down to another gal and it still circulates today. So gracious of a Lady she was. Seeing Ann and Ron together at the Club, around town and at Mass on Saturdays was so heartwarming. Two Special People in my Life and I am so blessed to have known them. My prayers go out to "all" of her family for comfort during this sad time of their lives. She is now an ANGEL ABOVE with her Ron and her parents and all of her Angels who have gone before. Find Comfort and Peace knowing we all loved her dearly xo One of the jokes the two of us had was she called me a Jersey Girl as she went to school in Jersey for awhile - she would tease me and say "Hey Jersey Girl" xo "a treasured memory for me"
God will hear all of our prayers as Angels are Always Watching Over Us XO Anita and Harold Haycook
