Obituary

Anna Margaret Magnussen, 92, New Smyrna Beach, FL quietly passed away Sunday morning, October 15, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. Anna was born in Stavanger, Norway to Anna and Julius Sathre. She married John K Magnussen on January 9, 1948 in Brooklyn, NY.

After her husband’s retirement in 1965 from Cities Service Oil Company as chief engineer, Anna and John became owner operators of a Dunkin Donut Franchise in Elmira, NY. Following her husband’s death in 1981, Anna continued to operate the donut franchise for several more years with the help from her daughter Julianna and son-in-law Kevin Bockus until she retired in 1987 and moved to New Smyrna Beach, Florida. While residing in Elmira, NY, Anna was a member of the Soroptimist Foundation, an international organization for business and professional women who provide volunteer service to their communities. Anna contributed time and financial support to community based and international projects making  life better in local communities and throughout the world.

Anna was a devoted member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Smyrna Beach for 30 years, sang in the choir for 22 years., and taught children’s summer bible school.  Anna loved singing and had the voice of an angel. Anna was a member of Martha’s Circle Bible Study. She volunteered her time weekly at HTELC making handmade quilts to send internationally to people of need of warmth and comfort. Our Mother had a very strong faith, loves the Lord and always told everyone “We have Jesus”. Anna loved playing the guitar, baking Scandinavian treats, singing, reading, listening to music, gardening and admiring the joys of Nature. She especially loved feeding the Koi in the fish pond, listening to the chimes and releasing Monarch butterflies that were raised in her daughter, Anna Radoff’s garden. Anna loved writing poems. She would write poems about everything and anything. Especially poems about her day and what she had observed. One of her poems titled “Time” was selected and published in Where Dreams Begin, a treasury of poetry compiled by the National Library of Poetry.

Survivors include her daughters Anna Lynn (Steven) Radoff of New Smyrna Beach and Julianna (Kevin) Bockus of New Smyrna Beach. Anna’s grandchildren who have been blessed to share time and memories with their grandmother “Mormor” these many years are Jonathan Radoff of Southboro, MA, Kari Radoff Espinoza of Rosindale, MA, Sara Radoff Deane of Capitola, CA, Sonja Bockus Wilson of Mooresville, NC, Eric Bockus of New Smyrna Beach and John Bockus of New Smyrna Beach.  Anna’s great grandchildren, Alexis and Maddox Wilson, Miranda and Kent Radoff, Julian Espinoza, Nora Bockus, Evelyn Bockus and Zoey Bockus were the loves of her life. She enjoyed using her iPad to connect and keep up with all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren on a daily basis. Anna is also survived by her beloved family dog Bella Radoff who she loved cuddling with and parrot Pretty Boy who sings beautiful melodies. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anna and Julius Sathre, husband John K Magnussen, brothers Leif and Julius Sathre and sisters Solveig Lundberg and May Libero.
