Obituary
Barbara Jean Hansen, of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, died on Wednesday, June 21st surrounded by her family. She was born to Ken and Lois Berendts on June 26th, 1949 and grew up in Winnebago, Minnesota, spending summers with her extended family at Bass Lake. She later moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where she met Tom Hansen who became her high school sweetheart, and later her husband of 46 years. Barb and Tom attended Mankato State University together where Barb graduated with honors. Barb and Tom raised two children together, living in cities across the Midwest and internationally, forming lifelong friendships along the way. Throughout that time, Barb’s support and grace created connections that allowed Tom and the kids to flourish. Wherever they lived, Barb created a warm, inviting home where all felt welcome and comfortable. She was frequently found in the kitchen, humming along to her favorite music as she prepared a delicious meal for her family or friends. Barb loved being near the ocean, and, after consulting the tide chart, she would comb the beach for the perfect shell, starfish, or sand dollar. Barb was the most amazing grandmother who showered her granddaughters with unconditional love and unending grandma kisses. Barb is survived by her husband of 46 years, Tom Hansen, daughter Erin Chamberlin and her husband Pete, son Mark and his wife Ann. She was the proud grandmother of Lainey, Meredith, Julia, and was excited to welcome her fourth grandchild in November. Barb is also survived by her sister Cathy Berendts, brothers Brad (Tammy) Berendts and Bruce Berendts, sisters-in-law Julie Larsen and Jan Speed (Jim), mother-in-law Marge Hansen, many nieces and nephews, and the cousins of Bass Lake. Barb was preceded in death by her parents Ken and Lois Berendts, father-in-law Julane Hansen, sister-in-law Deb Berendts, and brother-in-law Charles Larsen. Barb’s kindness, generosity, and beautiful spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew her. A celebration of her life will be held at the beach pavilion at Minorca in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, on Saturday, July 15th, 2017 11 AM.
