Obituary
Barbara T. Smith, age 97, died on March 4, 2018 in Fort Myers, Florida where she had lived since 1985, first on Sanibel and more recently at Shell Point Village.
Ms. Smith, a long-time resident of Anderson, South Carolina and a graduate of Anderson High School (1938), was born in Greenwood, South Carolina on November 12, 1921, the daughter of Zella Gertrude Gentry of Anderson and Adrian Lamar Thompson of Pensacola, Florida.
During the school year 1938-39 Ms. Smith attended Anderson Junior College before moving to Washington DC in 1940 to begin a 45 year career with the Federal Government that included 16 years as a Foreign Service wife as well as work with the State, Defense, and Commerce Departments and the White House where she worked for two years for Leonard Garment, Special Assistant to President Richard Nixon.
In 1944 she married Donald W. Smith, a career Foreign Service Officer, whose subsequent overseas assignments took the couple to Stockholm, Sydney, Bonn, and London, until her husband’s retirement in 1960.
Ms. Smith is survived by her son, Richard L. Smith of Rye, New Hampshire as well is two grandchildren, Jessica H. Smith of Oakland, California, and Zachary K. Smith, also of Rye.
