Bernardino Gavilanes, “Mino,” 79, died Tuesday, April 19, 2011 peacefully in his sleep at his home with his wife and oldest son by his side. Mino was born January 4, 1932 in Madrid, Spain to the late Eulalia and Bernardino Gavilanes. He married the love of his life Iracema Rodrigues on May 30, 1959. Mino served in the Ejercito Militar in Spain before moving to Brazil in 1956, then to Puerto Rico in 1960 and finally to the United States in 1983. Bernardino was a family man who loved to have the company of his grandchildren at his side while watching his favorite sport, soccer. He enjoyed playing the guitar and he spent endless hours playing the game of chess. Once he and his wife moved to Daytona Beach Shores, Mino could be found walking on the beach to a beautiful sunrise or an eye-catching sunset. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Iracema; his devoted children, Luis and his wife, Janet, Juan and his wife, Kharina, Iracema and her husband, Chris O’Brien and Maria and her husband, AJ Schmitt and nine cherished grandchildren, Jeannette, Margaret, Genesis, Felipe, Annmarie, Christina, Luis, Isabela and Daniel.
A life celebration will be held at 3:00PM, Thursday, April 21, 2011 at Woodland Cemetery, 399 Orange Avenue, Port Orange.
