Obituary

Betty Frederick, 96, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2020. Betty Jane Haggard, was born and raised in West Allis, Wisconsin. She had three older sisters, Lillian (Burt) Mohl, Mildred (Chuck) Rowe, and Ruth (Ernie) Demmith. Betty married her high school sweetheart, Tom Frederick, in 1943. After serving overseas in World War II, Tom completed his education at the University of Wisconsin, while Betty held down the fort with three children at home. Tom’s career in high school athletics took the family to Waterloo, WI., and Barrington, IL., where they raised their family and Betty was secretary to the Superintendent of Barrington Consolidated School District. Their final move came in 1979, when Tom’s office, the National Federation of State High School Associations, moved its headquarters to Kansas City, MO. Tom received many accolades in his life as an athlete, coach, and administrator. Betty’s unfailing support behind the scenes was instrumental to Tom’s successes. They were a team. Sadly, Tom died in 1990.

Betty moved to Naples, FL. in 1992, and enjoyed her time living at the Vineyards, where she met her second husband, Doug King. She had many memorable rounds of golf, and was the “hostess with the mostest” for too many dinner parties to count. Doug passed away in 1998. A few years later she met and married another widower, Jim Schneider, from Barrington, Illinois. In 2008, they moved from the Vineyards to their condo at Arbor Trace. Jim died in 2012. Betty was an accomplished seamstress and volunteered for many years making basinet liners for the Moses Project at Naples Community Hospital. She also could knit like a machine, having knitted well over 50 afghans to be left in the hands of loved ones. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, sister, and friend to many. Our memories will keep her with us, forever.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her three sisters, her husbands, Tom Frederick, Doug King, and Jim Schneider, her son, Dr. David Frederick, and great-grandsons Jack Frederick and Maximus Gildea. She is survived by her children, Tom (Kathy) Frederick of Denver, CO., and Bonnie (Ron) Coppi of West Des Moines, IA., daughter-in-law, Julie Frederick of Landrum, SC., nine grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

Betty’s and Tom’s remains will be interred together in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on September 04, 2021, which would have been their 78th wedding anniversary. Notes of condolence may be sent to their daughter, Bonnie Coppi, at 5967 Dakota Drive, West Des Moines, IA., 50266, or son, Tom Frederick, at 535-B Elmhurst Way, Highlands Ranch, CO., 80129.
