Obituary

Betty M. Peterson
March 15, 1930-January 1, 2024

In the early morning hours of January 1, 2024, Betty M. Peterson (nee McNeely), escorted by a host of angels, left this world for her eternal home where she was reunited with her husband of 68 years, Dale. She was a devoted wife, caregiver to her Mom Julia and Grandmother Allie, and a good friend to all who knew her.

Betty was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and moved to Miami, Florida at an early age. She was a graduate of North Miami (FL) High School. At the age of 22, she married the love of her life, Dale L. Peterson. She was employed by National Air Lines until 1980 when it merged with Pan American Airlines. She retired from Eastern Airlines after Eastern Airlines acquired PanAm.

Betty and Dale moved to Port Saint Lucie, Florida where they lived until Dale’s passing in December 2020. Along with her husband, Betty was an avid golfer when they lived at the Country Club of Miami and The Reserve at LPGA in Port St. Lucie. Betty and Dale loved numerous road trips with her sister Sybil. They often visited family up and down the East Coast.

She was preceded in death by her parents Horace McNeely, Sr. and Julia Futch McNeely; twin brothers, William McNeely and Horace Wesley McNeely; her sisters, Sybil M. LaGoy and Jacquelyn Tate; and her brothers-in-law Kenneth V. Tate, Sr. and Donald Peterson.

She is survived by her nephews, Kenneth V. (Regina) Tate, Jr., of Edgewater, Florida, Albert Gomez II, of Miami, Florida, and her niece, Sharon (Gene) Barker of Dunlap, Tennessee. She was Godmother to her twin great nieces Ashley Gomez-Reyes and Alison Alvarez both of Florida. Nephews also include Thomas and Harold (Jennifer) Peterson in Nebraska, Walter Peterson in Colorado and sister-in-law June Peterson in Nebraska. Great and great-great nieces and nephews reside in Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, and Tennessee.

A memorial service and celebration of Betty’s life will take place at a later date when Dale and Betty will be buried at the Canaveral National Cemetery in Mims, Florida.

Betty and Dale were dear friends for many years. We spend many Sunday afternoons on the golf course and shared many holidays with them . They were a loving couple always. Betty was an accountant with National Airlines, where I first met her. She was most organized and capable and everyone loved her. Rest in peace, dear friend.
