Carol Spiegel

Carol Spiegel, 83, died peacefully at home in Winter Park, Florida, on February 20, 2023. Carol was born in a log cabin in Eagle River, Wisconsin, to parents Roy and Dorothy Green. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin – Madison General School of Nursing, she worked as an R.N. for many years. Later, she took up her passion for interior design, receiving a degree from Illinois Central College. In her design career, she worked for Illinois Wesleyan University and later taught at the Boston Architectural Center.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years David Spiegel, children Kevin (Betty) Hackett, Karrie (Mark) Heartlein, and grandchildren, Thomas Heartlein and Margaret (Riley) Van Velsor. She is also survived by her sister Joan (Richard) Werla, and brothers Ron (Carol) Green, and Robert (Debra) Green. Her family is especially grateful to Heather Nielsen for her loving care for Carol.

Never afraid to take on a challenge, whether it was launching a new career, sailing the Great Lakes and Atlantic, or climbing mountains, Carol and David made their life an adventure full of travel, friends, and love.

    One moment,
    like a snowflake falling softly
    on a sparkling mountainside,
    gently, silently
    begins an avalanche.
    Such a moment
    was when we met.

Carol, your life came to me reflected in the writings of your life partner, David. It didn’t take much effort to see how deep your relationship was. I credit you both for an exemplary life and am disappointed I didn’t get to meet a fellow nurse.

It is rare to have people in your life with such a zest for living and a propensity for finding joy in every situation that it is infectious. Whose joy is obvious from the way they carry themselves and respond in conversation, even when you are truly expecting commiseration. I have been fortunate to have three such people in my close circle. Carol was among them and I miss them all. Rest in peace Carol and thank you for being you.

To my Carol, my best friend and most of all my family. I will forever miss you and love you for eternity. You brought so much love into my life with your smiles. It was a blessing taking care of you for the past five years and I wish God would’ve gave me an additional five years but I’m grateful for whatever I got. Remember what we talked about before you flew away and just know you took a piece of my heart with you. I love you mama. Please look over all of us.
