Obituary

Carol Nissly Thompson, 77, of Deland, went to be with her Lord on February 21, 2020.  She was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and graduated from Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts.  While in college she was on the gymnastics, water ballet and field hockey teams.  After graduation, she taught physical education for seven years in Stony Brook, Long Island.  While there she met and married her husband, Claude.  In 1973 she and Claude moved to Deland, Florida where they raised their three children.  She spent the rest of her career teaching at several schools in the Deland-Orange City area.  Carol was a born again Christian, always eager to tell others about her faith in Jesus Christ.  She was an active member of Stetson Baptist Church for over 43 years where she was involved in a variety of ministries, including outreach, evangelism, teaching in Sunday School, disaster relief, Vacation Bible School, Hearts of Gold, and prison ministry.  Carol enjoyed gardening and sharing her flowers with others.  She also enjoyed time with her family, especially when spent at the beach or watching the Florida State Seminoles play.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Claude; their three children, Daniel Wayne Thompson (Erica) of Yorktown, Virginia; JulieAnn Thompson Feezor (Don) of Warner Robins, Georgia; and Timothy John Thompson (Helen) of Bainbridge, Georgia; brothers, Roger Nissly (Betsy), Barry Nissly (Kathy), and Andy Nissly (Lisa), and 9 grandchildren, Timothy, John, Joshua, Abigail, Noah, Claire, Wesley, Annabelle, and Oliva, as well as several nieces and nephews.  A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, February 28 at Stetson Baptist Church in Deland, Florida.  The family will receive visitors at the church beginning at 10am, with the service to follow at 11am.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, 1 Billy Graham Parkway, Charlotte, North Carolina 28201.

Mrs. Thompson was an amazing woman who I first met as my pe teacher at St. Barnabas back in 1979. She was one of those people who made such a positive impact on you. She was always smiling. She a,so had to be one of the sweetest people I have ever known. I was so thankful for the opportunity I recently had to let her know how much of an impact she had on me when I was a young kid. She told me she wish she knew sooner. I only wish I had shared that with her a long time ago. To the family, prayers for peace and comfort during this difficult time. Love to all
