Obituary
Carol Nissly Thompson, 77, of Deland, went to be with her Lord on February 21, 2020. She was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and graduated from Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. While in college she was on the gymnastics, water ballet and field hockey teams. After graduation, she taught physical education for seven years in Stony Brook, Long Island. While there she met and married her husband, Claude. In 1973 she and Claude moved to Deland, Florida where they raised their three children. She spent the rest of her career teaching at several schools in the Deland-Orange City area. Carol was a born again Christian, always eager to tell others about her faith in Jesus Christ. She was an active member of Stetson Baptist Church for over 43 years where she was involved in a variety of ministries, including outreach, evangelism, teaching in Sunday School, disaster relief, Vacation Bible School, Hearts of Gold, and prison ministry. Carol enjoyed gardening and sharing her flowers with others. She also enjoyed time with her family, especially when spent at the beach or watching the Florida State Seminoles play.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Claude; their three children, Daniel Wayne Thompson (Erica) of Yorktown, Virginia; JulieAnn Thompson Feezor (Don) of Warner Robins, Georgia; and Timothy John Thompson (Helen) of Bainbridge, Georgia; brothers, Roger Nissly (Betsy), Barry Nissly (Kathy), and Andy Nissly (Lisa), and 9 grandchildren, Timothy, John, Joshua, Abigail, Noah, Claire, Wesley, Annabelle, and Oliva, as well as several nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, February 28 at Stetson Baptist Church in Deland, Florida. The family will receive visitors at the church beginning at 10am, with the service to follow at 11am.
