Obituary

Carol Frances Kappelman Yoss, age 84, was called home to the loving arms of her Heavenly Father on March 3, 2025 at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL.

Carol was born September 5, 1940 in a farm house in Waverly, MO to the late Benjamin Dean Kappelman and Glodene Huffman.  She told us stories of growing up on the farm with her three brothers and the hard work of taking care of animals, crops and the many fruit trees on their acreage. She entertained us with funny stories of being chased by angry chickens, snakes and once even by a bull.  She attended elementary schools in Waverly and graduated from Santa Fe High School in Warrensburg, MO in 1958.  She spent her college years at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, MO, graduating in 1964 with a BS in Nursing.  She worked as a dedicated and loving registered nurse for 39 years for The Menorah Medical Center and Rehabilitation Institute in Kansas City.

Carol met her beloved, John F. Yoss of Appleton City, MO, on a blind date and six months later they were married. The couple exchanged vows on June 5, 1964 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kansas City and began a life together anchored by their shared faith spanning over six decades.  In addition to her career in nursing, Carol was devoted to her family and friends, serving alongside John at Zion Lutheran Church, making time for PTA, Scouts and neighborhood events, and was always ready to host a party.   After her retirement in 2000 and subsequent move to The Villages, FL, Carol was active with volunteering at Hope Lutheran Church, quilting, golfing, dancing in the square and traveling the world with John, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by a son John Scott, two brothers Ellis Kappelman and Lawrence Kappelman, and both parents.  Survivors include her beloved husband John, her daughter and son-in-law, Jennfer and Brennan Smith of Knoxville, TN, her son Joel Yoss of Franklin, TN, 3 grandchildren, Sarah Frances, Benjamin Copeland and John Elias, and a brother Donald Kappelman and sister-in-law Lee Kappelman, of Olympia, WA.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the coming months at Hope Lutheran Church in The Villages, FL.  A family graveside service will be held later this summer at Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City, MO.  Memorials may be made in her memory to Hope Lutheran Church, The Villages, FL.
