Obituary

Charisse Yvette Greene, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 27, 1957. She passed away on May 7, 2020. Upon graduating from Mount Saint Joseph Academy in Flourtown Pennsylvania as a National Merit Scholar, she briefly attended Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. Initially, Charisse was recruited to attend the United States Naval Academy, until they discovered she was a woman. Several years later and still having the passion to serve her country, Charisse entered the United States Navy. Chief Petty Officer 1st Class Greene was an Aviation Electronics Technician who went on to duty stations in Orlando, Memphis, Tennessee, Jacksonville, Florida, Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, Sigonella, Italy and eventually Key West, Florida.

Upon retiring from the Navy, Charisse continued to serve the Orlando community through her service as a Substitute Teacher for Orange County Public Schools. She was highly sought after for her adept skills of being able to keep order in the classroom to provide students with a rich learning environment and experience. While she taught at numerous elementary, middle and high schools, Charisse had a fondness and admiration for the staff of Rosemont Elementary School. The discipline of the Navy would transfer to the classroom under the tutelage of Charisse. Students knew she would be no pushover.

In her spare time, Charisse was an avid reader. She enjoyed Science Fiction books and movies. Charisse was also a Trekkie, and with the throw backs of old television series returning, loved trying to solve the court cases on Perry Mason. Charisse had a love of nature and animals, once rescuing a cat from imminent death. She would later adopt and bring Tigger home from Puerto Rico, although many of us wondered why as Tigger was the orneriest cat many of us ever had the privilege of knowing. Charisse will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Charisse was predeceased by her father, Joseph I. Greene, Jr. She is survived by her loving mother, Helen C. Greene, her brother, Joseph I. Greene III and his wife, Michelle, and sister Artena Greene. Charisse is also survived by her aunt, Sandra Rawls, cousins Tyrell Coates, Sybil Wilkins (Ron), Cindy Coates, Brian Coates, Nathaniel Gilmore, Jackie Greene (James), MacLee Harper (Florence), Marilyn Harris, and Garry Stiles, nephews Joseph I. Greene, IV, Brian Smith and Shane Smith (Alicia).

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Charisse will join her father at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.
