Obituary

Charles William Covington passed away on January 20th, 2024 after a long and difficult battle with Parkinson’s Disease.  His loyal and loving wife of 55 years, Sandra Rush Covington, was faithfully at his side when he passed into the arms of Jesus.

Charles will be remembered by all who knew him for his brilliant smile and ready laugh.  He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, uncle and friend.

Charles was born in 1945 in Mobile County, Alabama to Lena Mae and Wesley Covington, and he lived there all of his young life. He was the youngest of 5 children, and his love of sports started at an early age.  Charles loved baseball, and he would often recall his childhood memories of playing “stickball” before school.  He played football for his high school, and he graduated from Vigor High School in 1963. He was a first generation college student and graduated from Mobile College in 1967 with a degree in chemistry.  Charles attended graduate school at the University of Alabama to further his studies in chemistry. In 1968 he married the love of his life, Sandra Rush, and moved to Georgetown South Carolina to work for International Paper Company.  This began an illustrious and long career in the paper and chemical industry.  This career took him from Georgetown back to Mobile and then on to New York City, Panama City, Jacksonville  and Tallahassee.  He retired to Orlando, Florida to be near his children.

Charles, “Papa” as he was affectionately known, loved to be out on his boat in the Gulf of Mexico.  He loved watching his children and grandchildren play sports.  He was an avid Alabama fan.  Roll Tide!  He loved playing golf.  He loved visiting his extended family near and far. He loved a good, practical joke.  Most of all, he fiercely and devotedly loved his Heavenly Father and his Bride, Sandra.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents and his four older siblings.

Charles was incredibly proud of each of his children and grandchildren.   He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra, and his three children:  Michelle Covington Cash, Matthew Charles Covington and Allison Covington Harris.  Michelle is married to Sid Cash, Jr (Winter Park, FL) and they have 4 children and a son in law: Caroline Cash Colson and Tyler Colson, Gaines Cash, Laura Leigh Cash and Claire Cash.  Matthew Covington is married to Jenae Haffey Covington (Sparta, NJ) and they have 2 daughters, Alyssa Warner and Ava Covington.   Allison is married to Adam Harris (Maitland, FL) and they have 2 children: Hannah Harris and Charlie Harris.

A Celebration of Life Service for Charles will be held on Saturday, February 17th at 10am at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Panama City, Florida.  2001 W 11th Street Panama City, FL.  A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to their favorite charity in Charles’ name.

Charles will be dearly missed.  His kind, gentle, loving and loyal nature made a huge impact on all who knew him.

There is no doubt in our minds that when he saw his Heavenly Father face to face he heard these words:

“Well done, my good and faithful servant”! (Matthew 25:21)

Sandra, Michelle, Allison and Matt. Our hearts were broken when we heard of Charles passing. Sandra, we always cherished our friendship in Mobile as we had young children and then in Tallahassee in our later years. You have a beautiful family. Wish we could be at the memorial but as we age we are limited on what we can do. We have the Hope of seeing our friend again. Our live and prayers to the family..
