Obituary

Charles Edwin Hughes, Sr., 66, of Englewood, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2023, in Venice Beach, FL surrounded by his family. Charles was born in Waverly, Ohio, on July 12, 1957, to the late Harold Eugene Hughes, Sr. and Evelyn Mae Forbes.  Charles “Ched” relocated to Florida in 1976 with his family. Charles is preceded in death by two brothers, William Corley “Fellar” Hughes and Thomas “Sweet T” Dean Hughes, Sr. and infant sister, Pamela Hughes.

Charles is survived by his children, Charles Edwin “Cheddy” Hughes, Jr. and wife Katherine of North Port, FL, Brittany Chelynn Hughes- Hoover and husband Christopher of Micanopy, FL; grandchildren, Sawyer Cole Hughes, Eveelynn Dean Hoover, Gavin Sage Hughes, Davina Grace Hughes, Owen Michael Hoover, Walker Cade Hughes; siblings, Candy (The late Ed) Fite, Harold Eugene Hughes, Jr. (Pete) and wife Betty, Drema (The late Victor) Lytle, Johnnie (The late John) Irvin, Debbie Hughes, and beloved sister in law Sharon Hughes and several nieces and  nephews who he loved dearly.  He also had extended family and good friends in Florida and Ohio where he grew up.

Charles was a loving father, son, grandfather and friend to all. He spent his career as an “Earth Mover” and loved driving all types of heavy equipment. He was always the life of the party when he went places and everyone lovingly knew him as Chedahootchie. He enjoyed fishing, going to the beach, collecting antiques, cooking and dancing.  He was innately creative, always tinkering with things and coming up with new ideas. He was a free spirit and had a one-of-a-kind personality. He was very patriotic and loved his country. Most importantly he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his children and grandchildren who he was very proud of. He will be dearly missed, but precious memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

A celebration of life will be held in early 2024.

Baldwin Brothers of Venice is honored to serve the Hughes family.

My sympathies to the entire family. Ched and I are both descended from Richard and Viola Kelley, he via my Aunt Mabel Kelley Forbes, and me through my dad and her only brother, Justin Kelley. He had a great deal in common with the men on the Kelley side of his extended family, based on the description of him here, though they never met. I have no doubt a grand family gathering and swapping of tales is on-going in Heaven, where there is joy in seeing him. I am keeping his close family and friends in my prayers. Love to the family.
