Obituary

C. Lois Wilson Sabo 12-1-20 to 3-14-15 United States Veteran, First Lieutenant (Ret.) C. Lois Wilson Sabo, 94, of Port Orange, FL departed this earth peacefully at Country Side Lakes through the compassionate care of Halifax Hospice on March 14, 2015, and joined her late husband John Sabo. Lois was born on December 1, 1920, in Fairburn, GA to Addie Mae and Edwin Wilson. She was part of the first graduating class from Emory University Hospital Midtown School of Nursing (Crawford W. Long Hospital) and later joined the United States Army where she proudly served her country as a nurse and First Lieutenant during World War II. After meeting Private First Class John Sabo in Georgia and corresponding while he served in Europe during World War II, she fell in love and married in Atlanta, GA, and then relocated to New Brunswick, NJ in 1945. She had two daughters Peggy Protko and Janet Mnich after moving to New Jersey. She and her husband later relocated to Port Orange, FL in 1976 for retirement. Lois was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend and nurse. She began her career as a caring and dedicated nurse supervisor at Crawford W. Long Hospital in Atlanta, GA in the Pediatric Unit where she treasured serving families and helping deliver their babies. Lois later enjoyed retirement in Florida with her husband. She travelled extensively to more than 30 countries from Africa to Australia where she enjoyed learning and immersing herself in new cultures. In retirement she continued to serve and care for others as a volunteer at Halifax Health Emergency Room for 10 years. She was an avid bird watcher, cared deeply for all animals, and loved to walk and be with nature. Lois was an adept writer, orator, and a kind, generous, caring, woman who enjoyed comforting others with her quick wit, sense of humor, soft southern draw, and kind words. Lois was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years John Sabo, parents Addie Mae and Edwin Wilson, siblings Helen McClure, William Edwin Wilson, Jr., Jerry Wilson, niece Mary Wilson-Fowler, and son-in-law Paul Protko. She is survived by two daughters Peggy Protko of Port Orange, FL; Janet Mnich of Piscataway, NJ; son-in-law Frank Mnich of Piscataway, NJ; three grand children Robert Mnich of Fords, NJ; Kenneth Mnich of Fords, NJ; Michelle Protko of Port Orange, FL; nieces and nephews of Georgia including Dennie McClure, Betty Leach, Carmen Wilson, Terry Thompson, Virginia Turner, Rena Wilson, and Mildred Brower. Lois will be interred next to her beloved husband at Van Liew Cemetery in North Brunswick, NJ. Memorial services will be private, and Baldwin Brothers Funeral Home will be providing arrangements. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Halifax Human Society, 2364 West LPGA Boulevard, Daytona Beach, FL, 32124.
