Obituary

Our dear Mom, affectionately known as Nana or Miss Connie, Constance Elfa Cupac of Merritt Island, Florida, passed away on the 27th of February 2023 at the age of 84 with family by her side.

Connie was an island girl. Born and raised in the beautiful island paradise of Antigua, WI; she joins her late parents, Lawrence and Eileen Gonsalves. She met our late dad, Daniel Ivan Cupac, while he was in the Navy stationed in Antigua. We are comforted imagining them, along with her late son, Larry Cupac, and other family members all holding hands and dancing once again in their forever paradise.

Connie is survived by her three children: Kathy Buthker, Dan Cupac, Carole Quintal, daughter-in-law Roberta Cupac, and son-in-law Clint Quintal of Merritt Island, Florida. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, her brothers- Gene and Larry Gonsalves, and many nieces and nephews.

Miss Connie was a pre-school teacher at Faith Lutheran in Merritt Island, Florida for 25+ years. In fact, if you had a garage sale between the years of 1990-2015 it is a good chance she was there “sailing” with her many grandchildren buying items for her classroom and everyone else! Miss Connie shared her love of children with Divine Mercy as well; she taught in the Rainbow Room for 15+ years. Miss Connie worked long days, but the amount of joy she received from all her children filled her heart.

Nana was the taxi driver, ice cream buyer, date night babysitter, gift giver, and love provider to her nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She helped raise many of these said grandchildren without the blink of an eye. Nana’s unselfish daily gifts of her time, energy, and compassion to her grands were simply beautiful. BEST.NANA.EVER.

Mom was undeniably the best role model to have as a mother. She always put the family first, checked for our needs, and supported her four children in every way possible. She was our hero. Our rock. Our loving, devoted mother, and we were blessed to have her. We know mom is watching us from above and will protect us through the rest of our journey here until we all meet again in forever paradise.

Finally, Mom spent the last four years of her life at an Adult Family Home in Rockledge, Florida. Our family is forever grateful to RC and Karen Wilkes at Above The Mark Care. The absolute love, care, and kindness they provided comforted our entire family. We love you guys!

To all who ever loved her, worked with her, or called her a friend. Thank you. She loved you right back!

Church Service will be held at Divine Mercy Catholic Church on Saturday, March 25th at 1PM – open to the community

Celebration of Life for family will be held at Faith Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 25th 2:30-5:30

The family asks that people make donations in support of Alzheimer’s Research, in lieu of sending flowers.

She was a very special lady She imparted a lot of wisdom to me , most of which he learned from her parents.
And from what she saw in her life. For example, she saw a kid running with a pencil in her mouth and fell face down. You can picture it. Since then, I do not put anything with a point in my mouth like licking off a dinner knife .
She truly loves and cares for the welfare of all the children who were lucky to have her in their lives

RIP friend. I love you and will miss you always.

Rest in peace, dear Connie. You will always be remembered for your beautiful spirit, and your legacy will live on through all those who had the privilege of knowing you. You touched so many lives, and your memory will forever hold a special place in our hearts. You were such a beautiful soul, sparkly, caring, loving, kind, and nurturing to all those around you. You had a way of making everyone feel special with your infectious humor and love of dancing. Your love for children were immeasurable, and you poured your heart and soul into teaching and caring for them. You will be dearly missed by your family and friends.

    To the best nana ever.
I have so many memories I never want to forget when it comes to Nana. But my favorite ones are the times that we would just spend the day with her. We would have McDonald’s or Burger King breakfast, watch her soap operas on your small tv in the car, feed squirrels, all of our commissary trips (especially when I got to pick out the snacks for her infamous snack closet) and especially our sleepovers! Chris and I are so grateful she got to spend time with Landon and Avery when they were little and they loved doing puzzles with her, coloring, reading, listening to her sing and playing with her nana bracelets. Her passion for teaching is what made me want to follow in her footsteps (which are big shoes to fill). I loved making all the kids jealous when I started working with her because she wasn’t just Miss. Connie to me, she was my Nana. I’m so thankful for Nana and how she always loved and accepted me no matter what awkward stage in life I was going through. She will forever be missed but her memories and love with forever live on. Love you forever Nana!

To the best mom in the whole world. Thanks for having my back, even though I was taller than her. She instilled in me my passion for cooking. Something I will continue to cherish. I enjoyed all the times we spend in Antigua. Going to the beach, playing cricket and going to the navy base to watch movies. All the good time we had traveling to all the softball games and all over the world. Thank you for helping me a better parent and for helping Berta and I raise our kids. You helped my kids and I gain confidence that would help us deal with the real world. I will miss your cooking, Sunday dinner, your giving spirit, and your patience. Love you mom

Nana poo. The owner of some pretty infamous one liners we still quote today. My favorite of her terms of endearment, ‘doo doo’, which I’ve adopted. No one understands it but in my head I hear Nana’s voice. Christmas Day I will only answer a phone call or text with her “mele kalikimaka”! Any time someone would call, I always knew when it was a family member because her Caribbean accent would come right out; always made me smile. Soaps in the afternoon after leaving Faith Lutheran and before she’d head to Divine Mercy. Wheel of fortune and jeopardy in the evening while she snacked on cherries or some other bowl of fruit, while my sister gave her pedis and I’d either be cutting patterns for her class or making her scratch my back. She even pretended to like our dance routines we all made her watch.

She was always supportive no matter what you wore or haircut you gave yourself, mess you got into, terrible music choices you made her play. There was not one single judgmental bone in her body. Maybe that’s why we’re all so free spirited in a way; she made us feel safe in being ourselves. She encouraged it. She was the nurturing mom a lot of us needed, the Nana that would spoil us, the friend you truly felt completely safe around. What a natural gift she had. Everyone felt it.

I cry as I write this, it’s a tough reality to face. I’ll never get over her diagnosis. What a cruel thing to do to someone who lived solely for her family and her people. She was all of our person. I know she knew she was surrounded by love, I am comforted in that. I loved the moments her eyes would click and you knew she knew.

We will carry on her legacy of treating everyone with kindness. We will make sure to do “the thing” without complaint or frustration (unless there’s a bunch of annoying kids running around then we’ll take another cue from her and yell something funny-which I’m not actually sure it was meant to be funny but we always laughed). We will give even our last piece of bread to someone who needs it, and figure out ourselves later.

    Love you Nana, so much.
