Daniel Bernard Coughlin (89) passed away on Wednesday evening, March 30, 2022 at the Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans Retirement Home in Port Charlotte, FL.
He was born March 5, 1933 near Mt. Pleasant, MI to Hazel and Bernard Coughlin. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School and also attended Central Michigan University. Dan was drafted into the Army Corp of Engineers during the Korean War. He served as Corporal over Company Arms. While stationed in Camp Carson (Colorado) he went on a blind date with a young lady who captured his heart. Dan and Luelen (Frederiksen) were married April 17, 1955. They returned to his hometown of Mt. Pleasant where they lived until 1997 when they retired permanently to Bradenton, Florida.
Dan was employed at Memorial Gardens as a salesman and caretaker, was a distributor for Sealtest Dairy, an operator at Dow Chemical Company and owned the D & L Party (convenience) Store. But his love was his farm. Coughlin Farms was established in 1963 raising corn, soy beans, wheat, hogs, and vegetables. He spent 34 years turning the earth, watching crops grow and raising his family. He led by example teaching his children the values of honesty, integrity and hard work. Those character qualities permeated everything he did and did not go unnoticed by his friends or those he did business with. He was a man of his word.
Dan loved to be outdoors hunting and fishing. After retiring and moving to Florida he took up another hobby….shuffleboard. It did not take him long before he achieved Pro Status. Something that he was very proud of.
During retirement Dan and Luelen bought a motorhome and had the opportunity to travel all over the United States, Canada, and Alaska. They also enjoyed cruising the Caribbean and Alaska. They were blessed with nearly 67 years together full of hard work, raising a family and then traveling together making memories.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents Hazel and Bernard Coughlin, son Mark, and brother Phillip Bolinger. He is survived by his wife Luelen, children Chris Coughlin (Pam) of Midland, MI, Linda Cantrell (Randy) of Springfield, MO, Luann Mowrey (Duane) of Hiawassee, GA, nine grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren and many additional family and friends.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Baldwin Brothers in Bradenton, FL. A graveside service is being planned for this Summer in Mt. Pleasant, MI where he will be buried next to his parents and son.
