Obituary

Daniel James Tierney, 72, of Titusville, Florida, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 26, 1951 to his loving parents Lois and Jack Tierney.

Danny is the beloved brother of Terence Tierney, of Pittsburgh, PA; Marianne (Mark) Valerio, of Prosperity, PA; Margaret (Brian) Darrah, ,of Valencia, PA. and Kathleen (Joseph) Tuite, of Bradenton, FL. He is the loving uncle of 5 nephews and a niece and endeared by many other family and friends.

Daniel is predeceased in death by his parents, Lois and Jack Tierney and his brothers, J.J. (Linda) and Steven Tierney.

Dan was a Corvette aficionado. He was also a kind and gentle man to all who knew him.

Dan recently retired as Chief Engineer from Kennedy Propellants and Life Support Systems at Kennedy Space Center. He was a dynamic scientist whose life passion was the shuttle program for over 30 years. His colleagues described him as a brilliant engineer, mentor and kind soul. Previously, he worked at Florida Power in St. Petersburg and Crystal River and Penn Elec in Johnstown, PA. Dan was a University of Pittsburgh graduate, a steel worker, an oil painter and the precious friend of many.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at Baldwin Brother’s Funeral and Cremation Society in Titusville (2400 S. Washington Avenue, Titusville, Florida 32780) from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, Dan would like donations to go to the American Cancer Society (https://www.cancer.org/). A memorial will be planned in November in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Daniel James Tierney will be greatly missed.

So sorry to hear this news
I met Dan at Pitt Titusville campus and roomed with him for a couple of years at the main campus. Dan was a good guy and a very serious, very hard worker. His dream was to work in the space industry, and through his hard work and perseverance, he made it. Kudos, Dan.
Dan was also an artist and deep thinker. I’m sure that he found it profound that he began his quest at one Titusville and ended it at another.
Rest in peace, Dan.

I just heard the sad news. I was Dan's room mate the first year at Pitt. in 1969. He taught me to drive a stick, on his Chevy Super Sport, which he had to sell to pay tuition. He saw many of his friends working at the steel mill and buying Corvettes. He studied long hours and said he'd get his Corvette after graduation. Regretfully we did not keep in touch, but I have great memories of good times.

We have only known Dan for the 5 years that we have been next door neighbors, but we couldn’t have been any luckier to have such a kind soul to know and talk with. He will be greatly missed and is gone way to soon. Rest in peace Sir.

I worked with Dan since the early 90s at Ksc in the Fluids Design group where Dan helped mentor me . It As a Designer, I always looked forward to working with him because I knew it would be a cool project and I had a great engineer beside me. I always enjoyed our conversations whether they were work related or about his new car. We shared an admiration for bald eagles and I’m sure he’s soaring with them now. You will be missed my friend.

From one Irish Family to another, you will be missed Dan. We loved visiting with you, talking Space Center, weapons of history and cars, Ford verse Chevy. You always made time for our visits and we will miss you Terribly. Our prayers go to your family.

DJ had a remarkable way of making everyone feel valued and comfortable. From the Papasan chair he had back when he lived in St. Pete to the scientific conversations had with friends outside of the science and engineering community, he was one of the rarest and most special kind. AND thinking of the corvette being a “sled” surely changed ;)

Dan did not go to Georgia Tech, but he certainly was “ a rambling wreck and a heck of an engineer.”
I knew Dan from our days working at KSC under the SGS contract. Dan always had time to explain to me the reasons hardware was configured as it was. He had such a clear grasp of the applicable engineering concepts that his explanations seemed simple and obvious.
Dan was a friendly, approachable guy with wide interests and dry humor; he was fun to talk to.
I’m saddened to hear of his passing.

Dan and I worked together supporting the Space Shuttle program. He was an experienced and knowledgeable engineer that was always happy to share his knowledge and help others. I learned a lot from him. He is definitely missed.

I was privileged to have worked with Dan under the ISC and KPLSS Contract at KSC since 2012. Dan was instrumental in helping to get the KPLSS Contract up and starting. When Dan talked (he was very quiet) people "Listened". He and I once took our cars (his Vet and my Alfa) and drove all over KSC taking pictures of our cars at the Launch Pad, in front of the VAB, and out to the race track the old Shuttle Landing strip. He was the envy of young KSC Engineers, and everyone knew when he wasn't at work that day because that bright blue Corvette was not in its parking place, he always got at 4:30am in front of the Operations Support Building!
