Obituary
Daniel Christopher O’Connell of Merritt Island, FL peacefully passed away at his son’s house in Port Charlotte, FL on Dec 20, 2020.
Dan was born in Woodhaven, NY on Christmas 1949. He grew up in Merrick, NY, and lived there until enlisting in the USAF in 1969.
He retired as a Senior Master Sargent after 21 years of service. During those years, he was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany as a weather observer, Chanute AFB, as a master instructor, teaching weather. He was a station chief at Camp Casey, Korea. His last assignment in the Air Force was as the Superintendent of Weather for Patrick AFB, Kennedy Space Center & Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Of all the assignments he had, teaching weather students at the DOD weather school at Chanute AFB was his favorite.
Dan had many talents & hobbies. He loved the outdoors, RVing, hiking, whitewater rafting, kayaking & gold panning. He was an artist. For many years, his artwork was in galleries in Brevard County, Fl. He was a great storyteller & loved talking to everyone.
Dan is survived by his wife of 51 years, Joanne and his sons Daniel M. O’Connell of Port Charlotte, FL and Christopher J. O’Connell of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine.
He has three beautiful granddaughters, Maren O’Connell and Jillian O’Connell of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, and Maryia Adolfie of Marlow, Ok.
He has one great grandson, Daniel Santos of Marlow, Ok.
He is survived by three sisters and one brother. Kathleen Nelson of Guilderland, NY, Theresa Voltaggio of Glen Burnie, MD, Anita Zito of Deer Park, NY and Raymond O’Connell of Old Bethpage, NY.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Jacqueline O’Connell of Merrick, NY, and his older brother Thomas O’Connell of Idaho Falls, ID.
Dan is being cremated and a memorial service at a future date.
Dan was a great lover of animals especially his dog Ozzie. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, Dan’s wishes were a donation to the Humane Society or a local animal shelter.
Dan, please know how much we loved you and will miss you. We will see you on the other side.
