Obituary

DARRELL DOMANICK passed away peacefully on August 29, 2022. He is survived by his loving wife Merilee (Curry) of over 52 years, his two sons Kirk (Liz) and Matthew (Angelina) as well as his two grandchildren Shane and Karson.

Darrell was born July 25th to the late Charles & Helen (Bellas). He is survived by his sister Cindy (Jeff) Matthews, brother-in-law Phil (Rita) Curry. He is also survived by nieces and nephews: Melissa (Brad), Zach (Deanna), Jennifer, Arika, Lisa (Brian), Elizabeth, Cate (Kevin), Jon and Joe. Preceding him in death were his brother Les, his in-laws John and Marilyn as well as brother-in-law Jon.

He graduated from Port Vue Liberty High School in 1966. He went on to play baseball on a full scholarship at Edison Jr. College in Ft. Myers and Appalachian State University where he graduated in 1970. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 1970 but chose a teaching career instead. He also earned a Masters degree at Penn State University.

He started a long teaching career in 1970 at West Jefferson School District and taught there until his retirement in 2007. His passion for baseball led him to a long coaching career during his tenure as a Health and Physical Education teacher. His popular baseball camps were a staple of the surrounding Pittsburgh area for many years. He also played competitive softball and racquetball for many years around the Pittsburgh area until his mid 50’s. In recent years he enjoyed pickleball and golf.

He also coached football, weight training, volleyball and basketball during his career. He loved to coach kids in the Baldwin and Bethel Park neighborhoods as well. One of his passions was going to Friday night football games with friends to watch his children play. He also loved all Pittsburgh sports, rooting on his Steelers, Penguins, Pirates, and Pitt.

After retirement, he became a master trainer and trained people at various gyms (LA Fitness, Anytime Fitness, Southpointe Fitness Club) throughout the Western PA area, as well as hosting boot camps for members. He made lifelong friends while training people and stayed in touch with many through the years.

He and Merilee moved from McMurray, PA to Ft Myers in 2016 into the Marina Bay community. They loved to entertain and host parties with friends and family over the years. They loved to travel and finally were able to visit Italy and Spain in the last few years.

He will be missed by so many friends and family who loved him dearly. A Celebration of Life will be held at The Club at Gateway on Sept. 29th. There will also be a service in Pittsburgh on October 13th at Chartiers Country Club. In lieu of flowers, please send any contributions to the American Heart Association.

Dom was a great coworker years ago. We worked together at TJ high school. Dom was always wanting the students to try their best at whatever sport he was teaching. My condolences to his wife Merilee and family. He was very nice and kind.
