Obituary

  David E. Powell, 68, of Orlando, formerly of St. Charles, Missouri, died on May 16, 2014. Dave was born September 20, 1945 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of John and Nellie (Knight) Powell. He married Elaine Hatfield in September 6, 1968. In addition to his wife Elaine, he is also survived by two sons: Steven (Kristi) of Columbia, MO; and Bryan (Katrina) of Winter Springs, FL; and grandchildren Michael, Jeanne, Elin, and Evan; brothers John "Doug" of Simi Valley, CA; Bruce of Littleton, CO and sister Janet Carter of Carlsbad, CA; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. David was born in ST. Louis, Missouri and moved to Orlando in 1992. He was a senior IT Architect for IBM before his retirement in 2012. He also worked at Lockheed Martin in Orlando and McDonnell Douglas (Boeing) in St. Louis, Missouri. Dave was active in the Boy Scouts of America where he served as both Cubmaster and Scoutmaster in St. Charles, MO. A Memorial Service will be Tuesday, May 20, 2014 from 12 – 2 p.m. at Casa Feliz Historic Home, 656 N Park Ave, Winter Park, FL 32789.     My condolences to the entire family. I went to school with Janet and Bruce but big brother David was often around when Janet and I would hang out at the Powell house. May your happy memories comfort you during this time.

    It has been wonderful having the Powells as my neighbors since 1994. Their yard and gardens have always been beautiful, the result of Dave and Elaine working in the yard every weekend. Dave was always smiling when he walked past my house with his grandchildren. My condolences to Elaine, Steve, Bryan and their families.

    I've known Dave since he was 16 years old, when he began dating Elaine, my sister. I was her matron of honor at their wedding in 1968, and over the last 20+ years, my husband (Bob) and I have had many wonderful trips with them. We've gone on numerous train excursions (Dave's favorite thing to do) and traveled to the Outer Banks, Sapphire Valley, and New Bern, N.C.; Colonial Williamsburg, Va.; Edisto Island, Beaufort, and Charleston, S.C.; Key West and Naples, Fla.; Las Vegas; New York City; Boston; and Newport, R.I. Dave had such a unique sense of humor, which had us in stitches. We shall miss our travels with him. Our hearts go out to the entire Powell family -- especially Elaine, Steve, Bryan, and the grandchildren.

    Elaine, we wanted to let you know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Henry sure did enjoy working with Dave at IBM (Fort Eustis, VA). We also enjoyed the times we got together at the Smithfield Inn for dinners with the both of you. David was a wonderful person who will be missed.

    Dave was one of a kind. My memories are full of so many things that "Bopper" was involved in, from fun water skiing on the Lake of the Ozarks and Benne's Lodge, to cruising Steak "N Shake in Florissant, MO. Bopper always had the coolest cars.
    And I'll not forget his signature, "Bopper", painted on the Washington/Elizabeth overpass in full view of his Alma Mater, McCluer Senior High School.
    He will be missed!

    I would like to offer my condolences to his family. I grew up next door
    (1 house between us) to the Powell family. We played together as children and attended elem. school across the street from me. David and I were selected (in 1st or 2nd grd. as maid of honor and he was my
    escort, afterwards his mother invited me to dinner for roast duck! It wasn't until later I found out that was the pet duck we fed everday after school!
