Obituary
David J. Hickey of Ormond Beach, FL, entered the gates of heaven on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 9:25 am.
He was born August 19, 1938 in Dunkirk, NY, where he worked for 30 years at Al Tech Corporation formerly known as Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation. He retired as the Inside Sales Manager in 1988 and he and his wife Peggy became residents of Ormond Beach, FL.
David was a devoted husband, father and grandpa. He was passionate about helping others wherever he saw a need, and was very proud to have served as a counselor for the Guardian Ad Litem program in Volusia County, FL.
David attended Cardinal Mindszenty High School, St. Michael’s College, and the Metals Engineering Institute; additionally he was an honored graduate of the Dale Carnegie Course and was asked to be a graduate assistant. Diagnosed with a cancerous tumor of the kidney as a two year old in 1940 he survived 77 years with a single kidney. In 1953 he travelled across country to California and back from Dunkirk with his Boy Scout Troop to attend the annual Boy Scout Jamboree. David enjoyed many pursuits during his life; traveling, basketball, weight lifting, swimming and bicycling were among his favorites. He also enjoyed snowmobiling, all forms of motorsports, photography and technology.
He is survived by his loving wife (59 years), Peggy Harris Hickey; Father of David (Susan) J. Hickey Jr., of Tarboro, NC; John (Rosa) A. Hickey of Whitakers, NC; Mary L. Hickey (Dawna) and Tom S. (Jamie) Hickey both of Palm Coast, FL. He is also survived by his siblings, Peggy (Michael) McGarry of AZ, Stephen (Tammy) of CO, and seven grandchildren; Megan, Kate, Cassidy, Justin, Blake, Christopher, and Alexis. David was predeceased by his parents Ambrose and Margaret Hickey, as well his sister and brother-in law, Mary and Tom Shiley.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 13, at 1:00 o’clock at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Ormond Beach. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Smile Train at smiletrain.org or the Guardian ad Litem Program at Guardianadlitem.org.
