I remember Irene as my first 4-H leader in the Sew Hi Sew Lo Club in Wayne Twp., now Huber Heights, Ohio. She was always caring and patient with us "youngsters" and always encouraged us to do our best in our sewing projects. She bowled with my Dad, Harold Shoup and sister Becky and other Wayne Grange members for many years. Irene always had a beautiful smile and gentle, caring ways. Our sincere sympathy to Chuck and family. Gary and Judy Holt and Becky Shoup

When I was very young I was lucky enough to visit Gramps and Grandma at their home in Ohio. At the time, I didn't realize just how lucky I was and what it would mean for me later in life. Arriving at their home, you could smell the pot roast Grandma had prepared for us. When we sat down under the big blue and white lamp in their dining room we were seated in front of warm place settings. Grandma would bring out her salad, which was made up of tomatoes and onions from the garden, along with herbs and her homemade dressing. The main course was always amazing. Then we would play a game and have ice cream. The last thing to do was to open that door to the upstairs, that always smelled like their home. That was just the start of the week. The rest of the visit would be filled with gardening, house work, shop work, cleaning, playing with the dogs, swimming at the country club, the visit to Udders and Putters, and a visit to Aunt Nancy's house. There were always extra things each year, like a new kitten or two to take home, or a free shot at the targets across the creek. Maybe even the best blackberry cobbler ever! The point was, it was country, it was real and there was love. True love. She knew what that meant. And we all knew it, just by the way she treated us. I have never met a more genuine person in my years. She was sweet and it came from her heart. She loved us, all of us, and she made sure we knew it. I will never be able to thank her enough for what she has given my family, but I know she can look upon us today and see how much we love her. Lucas told you goodnight tonight, and I know you heard him, Grandma. I love you.
