Obituary
Dennis Larry Applegate (“Uncle Denny”), 84, passed away unexpectedly Saturday October 25, 2025, surrounded by family at Advent Hospital, New Smyrna Beach, Florida. He was born June 2, 1941, in Dewey Oklahoma, the son of Arthur George and Viola Angeline (Stewart) Applegate.
Dennis Applegate was an honorable, loyal, hard-working, quiet, family man who loved the outdoors, boating, waterskiing, bike riding, camping, clam digging, gardening and woodworking. He also loved to take long drives along the winding mountain and lake roads and stargaze at night with his family. As a young child, Dennis’s parents moved the family to Columbia City, Oregon. While in high school Dennis excelled in Track & Field and Football and received numerous accolades and set records that withstood for many years. One fateful day in 1958, Dennis met the love of his life, Patricia Jeanne Dailey at St. Helens High School. On August 6th, 1966, Dennis and Patricia married, spending the next 59 years together side by side. He worked at the Portland Rose Gardens and in the logging industry, while completing his BS in Biology at Portland State University. In1969, they welcomed their daughter
Michelle Lynn Applegate, while building their forever home in St. Helens, next to Patricia’s family. Dennis worked as an elementary and middle school teacher of Geology, Biology and PE and in 1995 opened his own real estate appraisal business where he worked until he retired. Dennis and Patricia moved to Florida in June 2024 to be closer to their daughter and spend their remaining years enjoying beach drives and family outings with her, his three grandchildren (Haylee, Jakob and Lukas) and her fiancé Daniel Smith.
Dennis was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Ronald Applegate. Surviving, in addition to his wife, Patricia (Dailey) Applegate, are his daughter Michelle Applegate, her fiancé Daniel Smith and her three children, Haylee Gamble, Jakob Gamble and Lukas Gamble; his two sisters Joyce Hickey and Janet Myers and their families; his sister-in-law Joanne (Dailey) Widme and her husband Alan Widme, their 2 daughters, Christina Widme and Debra Mattinen and her two sons Ty and Wyatt Mattinen.
His legacy of kindness, generosity and love for his family and friends will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
