Obituary

It is with a heavy heart that Derrick “Jay” Craig, has passed at 70 years young, after a long illness.  Jay was a life-long resident of Fort Myers, Florida and a Cypress Lake graduate.  He was a motorcycle enthusiast and loved hunting and camping.

He is survived by his life partner of 28 years, Brenda Lawmaster, step-sons, Shane and Bryce, granddaughter, Brytani, sisters, Jamie (Clark) Dove, Joy (Jeff) Clark,  Jill (Greg) Tauriello, nieces, a nephew and many close friends.

A sincere thank you to Debra Davies, Tammy Gallant and the team at Hope Hospice for all of their care and support.

A celebration of life is being planned.

Gone too soon, forever remembered and forever loved.

It's been a long time but I still think of you all the time. I showed up to meet you as a job but from day one found you were a friend and that's where you stayed. We talked about literally everything (mostly motorcycles) and ended up being one of the best friends that I ever had. I will never forget you, Jay and it was me who was blessed, far more than you.

    Remembering my Big Cousin Jay.
You were 10 years older than I, which caused me to always be just "a little bit in awe" of you as a child. ;) I can still hear your voice as you teased me and I always loved the attention from you. Your family meant so much to me growing up and I cherished our gatherings on holidays and special events. Even when everyone else had moved away you and Brenda were always there on Christmas Eve which meant so much to my parents as the years passed. I am most thankful for the relationship you had with my brothers, Ron & Bryan, and the memories you all made together. I love hearing the stories of the crazy things you all did growing up. Many of them have become legends! And though you have left us way too soon, I know you are at peace and am thankful your suffering is over. My love and prayers are with Brenda, your sisters and family.
Forever your "littlest" cousin, Julie Marie

    Jay,
You were so much more than my cousin, you were my big brother. I’ll cherish all the great memories I have of us growing up, from stake boards and rafts to camping, drag racing and motorcycle trips. You always had a story to tell and a big heart. But most importantly, I knew I could always count on you to be there if I needed you. You were a big part of my life growing up and you held a special place in my parent’s and brother’s hearts as well.

I know you’re in such a better place now, but I’ll miss you until we meet again.

Ride on bro, and take good care of my little brother,

    Ron (ak Roneldo)

    My brother in law Jay:
The blood brother I never had.
Our first meet I saw & not only heard a tall but soft spoken gentle man whom had no shortage of words & said things the way he saw them. I’ll never forget 1990 when you took me tarpon fishing near Cape Coral with one of your buddies. A severe, rapid thunderstorm appeared & we took shelter on an old fishing shack in the bay.
    It quickly got dark out.
The waves were crashing all the way up above the pilings against the cabin walls, lightning & thunder were everywhere (close by I might add!) my heart was pounding as we were watching snook swimming in the cove light up from phosphorus. And then we had to go down the stairway during the storm to bail out the boat with a coffee can as it became half full of water!
Though time & distance went on, we recently had an arranged time to talk about SOMETHING most important. You chose the rite road.
    See Yah Jay Jeff
