Dettmer was born in McClusky, North Dakota. He Served in the United States Army during World War II at Guadalcanal. He then worked as a research technician at Texaco Research Labs in Glenham, NY later retiring to this area in 1982 from Beacon, NY.
Some of his activities included serving on the Beacon School Board, as an Elder at First Presbyterian Church in Beacon and as a Boy Scout Troop leader. But his favorite in life was the enjoyment of spending time with his family.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 64 years Joyce, son Bill (Linda) Bauer of Hobe Sound, FL, daughters Deborah Ahlgren of New Smyrna Beach, Kristin Bauer of Alexandria, VA, brother Lloyd (Marsha) Bauer of McClusky, ND, sister Geraldine (Vernon) Schneider of Goodrich, ND, six grandchildren Erik, Nina and Ethan Ahlgren, Veronica (Tyler) Whittington, Amber Allen, Kari Inman and six great grandchildren.
In lieu of other remembrances the family requests donations to American Heart Assn 555 W Granada Ormond Beach FL 32174.
