Obituary

Donald Cameron Ross, 80, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2024, at home in Punta Gorda, Florida with family and friends by his side.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 14, 1943, Don lived a life marked by entrepreneurial success, deep family bonds, and a passion for life’s simple pleasures. He attended Kent State University, laying the foundation for his future business success.

Don married Linda Ross (Heinrich) on March 6, 1965. Together they raised three children: Wayne, Steve and Jan.

He found love again and remarried Lorraine Ross (Berg) on September 12, 2002.

After an early career at W.W. Williams, a multi-state construction equipment distributor, Don was a partner in purchasing a small equipment dealership in eastern Ohio in 1983, renamed RECO Equipment, Inc.  Don’s visionary leadership was instrumental in RECO’s dramatic growth until his retirement in 2008. The strong foundation he helped establish continues to thrive today, with RECO now serving much of the eastern United States.

Throughout his career, Don’s business acumen and mentorship touched the lives of hundreds. He leaves behind a proud legacy. His impact on the business and its people remained a source of pride for Don long after his retirement.

Don was a loving husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He was a generous man and loved his family deeply. He had a personal relationship with his maker and Jesus Christ.

Don’s zest for life was evident in his many passions: golf, fishing, piano and tennis. These hobbies not only brought him joy but also fostered lifelong friendships. He was a great listener, brought out the best in others and always up for friendly competition. He was adventurous and enjoyed life to the fullest.

Don was preceded in death by his father, Donald C. Ross; mother, Evelyn Marie (née East) Ross; son, Wayne Ross; brother, King David Ross; and sister, Lynne Ruehle.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Lorraine; son, Steve (Christine); daughter, Jan (John) L’Ecuyer; first wife, Linda; stepdaughter, Jemma; and grandchildren, Emily (Aaron), Adam (Kirsten), Elizabeth, Allison (Matthew), Lauren, Madeline, Katherine, and Caroline. Don was also a proud great-grandfather to Cameron, Olivia, Mattison, and future generations yet to come.

As Don would always say with a smile, ‘LOVE YOU BYE!’ – a parting that sums up his big heart and sense of humor.

Lorraine, Please accept my condolences for your recent loss. I also graduated June 1961 from West Geauga High School. Living in Tampa for many years and now Spring Hill, FL, I wanted to send a hello to you. Don's obituary mentioning his personal relationship with his Savior was wonderful to hear. That's my calling card too. May you enjoy wonderful memories of your time together.

    Very sincerely.

My friend Don, you are so missed, golf isn't the same without you. In fact, the Islesmen are missing a large part of what made it the best group that I have ever played with. When you took over the Saturday nickels group until you were involved with the Tuesday and Thursday groups, you always made everything more enjoyable for everyone. Now when I stand on the seventh tee, I face your house and tip my hat to my friend Don, you will be in our hearts always.

I always enjoyed playing golf with Don, a true gentleman and really good golfer. A real competitor but always accepting what the shot gave him. Plus, he could hit the ball further than the younger guys. They say you can see a man’s character on the golf course, and he always showed his true colors. I am proud to have called him a friend. We will all miss you.
    Bob

Don was one of the nicest men one could call friend. Ever smiling ever humorous, Don was a pleasure to golf with ( always shot a better round than I could). Will remember him always when traveling past his home on the sixth hole. Jay Cavanaugh
