Obituary
Douglas Hallock Matthews, 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by his
loving family, January 23, 2023. Born and raised in Staten Island, NY, he joined the
US Navy serving proudly from 1958 to 1962 as an electrician’s mate. He later settled
in Hillsborough, NJ where he raised his family and was an electrician for the former
Doris Duke Estate before working for Bristol-Myers Squibb as the Electrical Shop
Supervisor for many years. After his marriage to Bobbi in 1990, they moved to
Temecula, CA where they owned and operated 2 Pack n’ Mail stores for 6 years and
then moved back to Hillsborough, NJ and Fort Myers, FL.
Douglas was a life member of the Hillsborough Township Volunteer Fire Co.
No. 2 serving as Chief from 1980-1981 and serving as a member of the company for
about 50 years. In addition, he was a life member of the VFW and was an avid
fisherman. He enjoyed woodworking and was a master craftsman making furniture
and toys for his family and others. For the past 25 years, Doug and his wife, Bobbi,
lived in Jamaica Bay Village, Fort Myers, FL where he was an active member of the
Veterans’ Club and co-chaired the Saturday Morning Kaffee Klatch. He was a
dedicated husband, father, and grandfather who will be sadly missed by his family,
friends, and all who knew him.
Douglas was predeceased by his sister, Cynthia White, and a stepdaughter,
Amy Gordon.
Surviving is his beloved wife, Bobbi Matthews, his cherished children,
Kimberly Kotz and husband Steve, Kurt Matthews and wife Karen, his adored
stepchildren, Karyn Quigley and Jennifer Edwards, his treasured grandchildren,
Samantha, Christian, and Steven, and his beloved step-grandchildren, Kevin,
Michael, Sarah, Jason, Connor, and Jadyn.
Doug’s wishes were to have his cremated remains scattered at sea during
military honors aboard a Coast Guard ship. Memorial contributions may be made in
