Obituary

Earline Margaret Hemphill, 85, of Old Bridge New Jersey passed away on Tuesday, July 5th. Born in New York City, she was a starting guard for her high school basketball team before graduating and working as a switchboard operator in the insurance industry. Earline was predeceased in death by her parents Earl and Hannah Petersen and her brother Fred Petersen. She is survived by her three children: sons Joseph Hemphill and wife Carol of The Villages, Florida; Christopher Hemphill of Guyton Georgia; and daughter Kathleen Jensen and husband Peter of Waretown, New Jersey as well as three grandchildren: Richard Allport and wife Lindsey of Redondo Beach California; Caitlin and James Hemphill of Hazlet, New Jersey, and two great grandchildren: Carter and Clarke Allport of Redondo Beach California.

Earline was a cancer survivor who enjoyed all things nautical, collecting lighthouse replicas of each lighthouse she visited. She loved going whale watching or walking on the beach, especially with her beloved dogs. She liked watching basketball and football (cheering for Rutgers University), as well as Betty Davis movies. She also spent time caring for her plants, completing puzzles or reading novels by her favorite author, Robert Ludlum.

Her strength at overcoming obstacles she encountered in life was phenomenal, but her focus always stayed on her family and friends who will miss her dearly. We celebrate her life and give thanks for the time we had with her.

Dear Earline was an anchor for my Dad after Mom died. They were neighbors in Old Bridge Senior Housing. She referred to herself as Dad's little sister. They were very close and a great support system for each other. My husband and I kept in touch with Earline, speaking on the telephone every 2-3 weeks. Her signature sign-off was always, "Stay Safe". She loves her family and her grandson and his family were often highlighted in our talks. It lightened her spirit to speak of her family. She will definitely be missed and and was a grand woman.

She was a very nice neighbor and you could talk to her about anything. I am going to miss seeing her around and our little chit-chats. May she now rest in peace.
