Ellen O’Keefe, 88, passed away April 5, 2023, at her Sarasota home with her family by her side.
She was born August 25, 1934, in New Brunswick, NJ, the youngest of three children. The loss of her own mother when she was only nine years old inspired her to become a devoted mother herself.
After graduating from West Side High School, she married John O’Keefe. He considered her the love of his life and his true best friend. Together for over 70 years, they rarely spent time apart.
Ellen always had a smile and a kind word. She knew how to listen, and her common sense was a gift. Ellen made an impact on everyone she met along their several moves to different states during John’s career. Their move to Sarasota almost 40 years ago was a lifelong dream realized early. They were eventually joined there by all of their children. Having family nearby was what mattered most to Ellen.
She was a great cook, but what she loved most was being presented with a challenging sewing project.
She is survived by her husband, John, and her three children, Ellen Piskoty and her husband Steve, Peggy Close and her husband Tim, and John O’Keefe. She has 4 grandchildren, Conor Close and his wife Marte, Haley Close and her husband Eric, Steven Piskoty, and Daniel Piskoty, and a great granddaughter, Matilda Close. She is also survived by her brothers, Donald Barlics and Jack Barlics, and numerous nieces and nephews.
