Obituary

In Loving Memory of Eugenia Roberts Cowper Highsmith of New Smyrna Beach/Oak Hill Florida formerly of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

Born on February 3, 1957, in Windsor, NC, Gene was the cherished wife of Robert and the loving mother of Laura, Sarah, Sally, and Jill and  grandmother of Emily. Gene passed away peacefully on January 3rd, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a woman of uncompromising integrity, unwavering strength and unparalleled grit.

Gene was a beacon of strength, love and support for her family. Her daughters and granddaughter were the light of her life and brought her endless joy. Her devotion to her family knew no bounds, and her love knew no limits. She would move oceans for the ones she loved. Gene had a strong moral compass that helped guide her throughout her life. She never gave up on anyone and saw the best in every person that crossed her path.

Alongside her husband, Robert, Gene created a home filled with warmth, laughter, love and many home knitted scarfs, hats and Christmas ornaments that her family will continue to cherish. Among her many accomplishments in life was her professional career which included 45 years in the real estate industry  & owning and operating, Island Rentals with her husband. Gene was an avid gardener with a green thumb that brought life to everything she touched. She found tremendous joy when she was creating things for the ones she loved, sipping a hot cup of coffee on the porch or reading a good book.

Gene is survived by her husband of 46 years Robert, and children Laura (Brian), Sarah (Shawn), Sally (Eric) and Jill (Jeffrey),  granddaughter Emily (Georgiy), sisters Harriett (Bo) and Ann. Gene was preceded in death by her parents William and Helen Cowper, her sister Helen and her brother Bill.

Gene will be missed everyday by her family. May her gentle soul rest in eternal peace.

If you would like to extend your condolences to the family, cards can be sent to Robert Highsmith PO Box 694 Oak Hill Fl 32759.

I was lucky enough to be invited into Gene & Robert’s home as a child to celebrate occasions with their family. Gene was a strong, patient & understanding woman & mother. She had four girls and was a rock for them. She is an example for all of us and demonstrated love & kindness for me when I needed to know it existed. She will be greatly missed.

I love you with all of my heart Mama. You are the best of each of us. You were the best mama any one could have ever had and you have done so much for me. Your heart was pure gold and you were my best friend. I could tell you about anything without fear of judgement just love and compassion. I will miss you so much that words do little to express the true depths of my feelings. I love you

Some of you know how difficult this year has been. My mom fought a tough battle this year and no one can take that away. Anyone that knew her knew she spoke her mind & had more integrity and compassion in her pinky than most people you will ever know. She was tough but beyond fare and never stopped at just 2nd chances and gave 3rd , 4th, 5ths helping you along the way to getting it right…. She is resting easy now and no longer suffering. I will always cherish each of our moments. We will all continue to be stout & sturdy and stand tall for her because that is what she would have done for us. Mom will have a small private family service but if you'd like to share condolences you can find that information here:
