Obituary
1931-2023
Frank Glen Crow 91, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2023. Glen was born September 27, 1931, to Grover and Rosie Crow in Bernie, Missouri. He was their 11th child of 14 children born into this family. Glen was the uncle to 51 nieces and nephews.
In 1950 he joined the U.S. Navy and was the navigator on a Naval Flight Crew. It was during this time, in 1951, that he married his high school sweetheart Clara Lee Tripp. They had two sons Bruce and Scott.
After the Navy Glen went on to get his Bachelor’s Degree at Texas A&M and later a Master’s Degree at MIT. In 1962 Glen started his lifelong career with NASA and Directed the Guidance and Navigation program for every Apollo mission and became a Senior Engineer on the Space Shuttle program until he retired in 1996. During his Apollo years he enjoyed playing softball at Kars Park, with teams made up of NASA engineers and Mercury and Apollo astronauts. He also played poker one night a month in his home and the homes of other engineers, with some of these same astronauts. On January 27, 1967, he was in a small building next to the launch pad performing a pre-launch test with the crew of Apollo 1. The capsule caught fire killing commander Gus Grissom, Roger Chaffee and Ed White. Disaster struck again in his career on January 28, 1986 while Glen was in the launch control room at his console. The Space Shuttle Challenger exploded killing the entire crew, including his close friend Dick Scobee. Glen returned to work later that night with a small group of Senior Engineers to speak to the, then Vice President, George Bush to discuss what had happened. This led to a yearlong investigation into the accident.
