Obituary

Fred N. Carter (85) Of Port Orange Florida, passed away on February 16, 2024.  Fred was born September 21, 1938, in Danville Virgina to Doc Andrew Carter and Ester Ennis Vaughn.  He was the youngest of 14 children.

Fred enlisted in the United States Navy on September 22, 1955, where he went on to attend bootcamp at Bainbridge Naval Academy in Maryland. In 1956 he became an apprentice as a cable-layer on the USS Amphion {AR 13} Norfolk VA. In February of 1957, he transferred to the USS Thor {ARC4} Portsmouth NH on the 6th Fleet. May 1957 saw him continue to Treasure Island San Francisco Bay with the 7th fleet. In 1959 he transferred back to the 6th fleet and returned to Portsmouth NH.  There he met his first wife, Brenda Marston Carter, and married March 7, 1960, in North Hampton NH.  He would later meet his second wife in Daytona Beach FL, Carolyn Malarney Bacom, and they were married July 23, 1978. Carolyn sadly passed on March 15, 2022.

After his honorable discharge from the navy, he became employed at Chicopee Manufacturing Company in Manchester NH, and then worked for many years at Sanders Associates. In the early 1970s, he moved to Daytona Beach where he became a Prestige Auto Body Repair and Custom Painter and was employed by Mercedes-Benz, Terry Taylor, Pontiac, John Hall and Ford.

Fred loved to play golf and fish, and above everything else, he loved his family.  He enjoyed spending time with his great grandchildren. Fred also enjoyed watching old western movies as well as watching the races, His favorite sports team was the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Fred came from a long line of family musicians and has been known to strum a few strings on the guitar himself. He came from a long generation of tobacco farmers, and he enjoyed working alongside his father in the field. He recalls one of his favorite memories of his father was being able to spend the night with his father curing tobacco. He also shared that when growing up, he was allowed only 1 pair of shoes that he was able to wear to church and special occasions.

Fred is survived by his daughter, Sherry Carter Coons and her husband Michael Coons of Palm Coast, FL his 2 sons, Fred A. Carter and his wife Linda Perman Carter of Port Orange, FL, and Keith W. Carter and his wife Joan Scott Hanson Carter of Englewood FL. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Jason Coons of Madison FL, Christopher Coons of Palm Coast, FL, Christina Carter of Daytona Beach, FL, Meghan Carter of South Daytona, FL, Fred A. Carter Jr. of Ormond Beach, FL, Rachel Carter and Matthew Carter of Englewood, FL, and Brandon Carter of Manchester, NH, and 7 great-grandchildren, Jason Coons Jr. and Jaxson of Olney, IL, Aubrie Coons and Gianna Carlucci of Madison FL. Kaden Marrs of South Daytona, Fred A Carter the lll of Ormond Beach, FL, and Haislee Carter of Manchester NH, as well as many nieces and nephews and extended family members.

Fred is dearly loved by his family and friends, and his memory will live in our hearts forever.
