It’s hard to believe how the years accumulate so quickly. I first met Fred over 65 years ago when we started 3rd grade together at Corpus Christi in Warwood. We became good friends as the home we had just moved into was about a half of a block from Fred’s home on Hazlett Avenue. I still remember my Mom asking me after the first day of school that year if I had met a boy named Fred Roth. Even after Fred moved to Romney Road, we saw each other often as we had most of the same classes at Central High. After college, we together frequently, usually watching the Mountaineers or Pittsburgh pro teams. I also remember once visiting him for a Marshall game when he lived in Huntington. Fred, another friend and I even drove to Atlanta for the 1972 Peach Bowl together for what turned out to be a rather lackluster performance by WVU.
Although we didn’t see each other too often in recent years, it was always good to know that Fred was my good friend in WV or Florida.
We certainly will be with you in thoughts and prayers this Saturday, especially when WVU plays Texas Tech that evening.
