Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Garrett Bowden Zeller, age 25, on Tuesday, February 14th, 2023 in Edgewater, Florida.

Garrett was born April 27, 1997, in Orlando, Florida, and was a lifelong resident of New Smyrna Beach. He attended New Smyrna Beach High School and was an accomplished chef with tenures at several prominent local restaurants. He loved the outdoors and was an avid surfer and skateboarder. Garrett had a tremendous love of animals, and the family is asking in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Southeast Volusia Humane Society in Garrett’s name.

Garrett is survived by his parents, Michael Zeller and Loretta Martin, his sister Layne Zeller, and his grandparents, Oscar and Barbara Zeller. Garrett is also a nephew and relative to many aunts, uncles, cousins, and a beloved friend of Valerie Sanchez. Garrett is preceded in death by his grandmothers Marie Zeller and Elizabeth Hall.

It is hard to write, to articulate. Garrett was valiant. He struggled and made incredible gains in his goals in the short time he was in our home. This was a horrific, ironic accident considering all he accomplished. I'll never forget his great laugh, his thoughtfulness when things were difficult for Mikel or me at home or at work. His insistence on pitching in. His full awareness of the gift Valerie was in his life. Or how hard he was on himself. We will miss you always, Garrett. You were a blessing to get to know. May you be at peace. We love you.

Sweet sweet Garrett. Our family is absolutely devastated! You are an honorary member of the McCain clan and we are so grateful for each get together, call, text, laugh, tear, all the moments, we had with you! Although our lives are forever changed and we will never get over losing you, we are trying to remember you are at peace now and that you knew how much we love you. A week ago today, you said your last “I love you” to us and I can’t begin to thank you. This is something that will carry us through. We often joked you would be our ex-son-in law one day, but secretly we always hoped that the “ex” would be removed. Rest easy and watch over us.

To Garrett’s family…Our hearts break for you. We are sending you love and peace. We only knew Garrett as the most kind sweet soul whom our family adored. His memory will always be with us.
❤️ James, Dawn, Raven, & Gavin McCain
