Obituary

George Ackerly, age 73, of The Villages, Fl, (and formerly Rockaway, NJ) died on Monday, January 18, 2021 from complications from Parkinson’s Disease and Covid-19. He was born September 24, 1947 in Jersey City, NJ, son of the late George Ackerly and the late Irene (Roszkowski) Ackerly.

George was the beloved husband of Linda (Hedrich) Ackerly, and dear father of George (Jodi) and Kate (Mohammad). Loving grandfather of George, Madison, and Brookelyn Ackerly and Autumn and Lauren Langham. Brother of Irene Jessup, Karen O’Donnell, Janet Floyd, Paul Ackerly and the late Linda Juckett.

George had a satisfying career with NJ Bell/Verizon retiring in 2002 after 36 years.  Not one to sit around, his retirement job was working for Morris Area Paratransit System (MAPS) driving seniors and handicapped to work and to doctor’s appointments.  He retired again in 2016 and moved to The Villages, Fl.

George was a simple guy.  He loved his family, his job, pizza, hot dogs, beer and chicken parm!  He loved his jeans and his sweatshirts.  He leaves behind a drawer full of brand new, never opened packages of socks and shirts.  The only jewelry he wore were his wedding ring, cross and chain and his Timex watch.  He rarely spent money on himself but was generous with family, friends, his parish and the charities he loved to support.

George volunteered selflessly to the St. Cecilia community in Rockaway, NJ.  He was a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the PreCana team and taught CCD for many years. He & his wife Linda were a team couple for Worldwide Marriage Encounter for over 25 years where he made many treasured lifelong friends.  He and Linda also taught Natural Family Planning for the diocese of Paterson.

George will be remembered for his warmth, generosity and wit. His welcoming smile, gentle humor and kind heart were loved by all. George’s sharp intellect during holiday trivial pursuit games and his competitive nature at the various family pinochle and poker tables are legendary. George was an amazing example of what a husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and cousin should be.  He will be sorely missed and will always be in our hearts!

Arrangements entrusted to Baldwin Brothers Funeral and Cremation Society.  A Celebration of Life will be planned later in the year. Donations to Parkinsons.org or the Michael J Fox foundation are greatly appreciated. Please share a story or two about George.

George, you were and always will be an amazing man. I'll miss our sports conversations and your awesome insight to always ask if I needed a beer. I'll miss you running the family poker games too. You accepted me with open arms when I joined this family, and I know St. Peter's arms were wide open for you at the Pearly Gates. Save me a seat at the table. I'll shuffle next hand. Love you.

To the Ackerly Family, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. George was a co-worker in Cedar Knolls during the early 1980's, and he was one of the nicest people to be around. My Dad worked with him too in Switching when George worked in Whippany. If you asked George a question, he had the cutest habit of squinting, twitching his moustache, and wrinkling his brow. Dad nicknamed him "the man of a thousand faces". Having a co-worker like George made coming to work each day more of a pleasure than a chore. The Ackerly family will be in my prayers remembering a super nice man gone too soon, but now free from suffering.

To Linda and family....I am so sorry to hear of George's passing. We were the best of friends throughout high school and had hopes of attending the same college to continue our friendship. I'm sorry that we drifted apart. His obituary described bed him so well...a caring man with a great sense of humor. So very sad that he is no longer with us. Rest In Peace my friend. You will always be a very positive memory in my life.

“Uncle” George, you were the best godfather anyone could have. I am grateful for all the memories together-camping, my first communication, seeing you in the stands at my college graduation and giving you a hug at my wedding to name a few. I know you’re watching over us all and are no longer in pain. We raise our glasses to you and love you so dearly.

This is HARD and this is EASY. Hard, because we didn't have a chance to say goodbye. Easy, because there are so many great memories. We are grateful for this forum to express our deep loss and diminishment. We light candles hoping to bring back the energy, and it is of some small comfort.
Sal and I always looked forward to spending time with you and Linda. How much fun we had going to the casinos of Las Vegas and Atlantic City! Sal recalls that during the week of our Vegas wedding, we visited the Mirage and decided to have a drink. They had a bar that overlooked the Sports Book. A wall of jumbo screens displayed what seemed like endless sports games from across the country. We all sat with a beer or a cocktail and played video poker while simultaneously watching the huge screens. You were in heaven!
Peg remembers the time we played the Quick Hits at the Borgata, and we told you we were going to win $1,000...and we did! The four of us hauled a-- to a good restaurant for a great meal.
George, we'd like to think that you will read these reminiscences and know how devastated we are by your death. We lost you too soon, and being the gamblers that Sal and I are, we'd be willing to bet that you had no idea of the impact of your death, and the many people who admired you. Like a butterfly, your touch was light and brought incredible joy. Thank you.

We are so happy to have known you. When Linda brought you to meet us 51 years ago in the Bronx, we knew she had found her soulmate.
We only wish that we were closer during the years. But, we connected again after we all found ourselves living in Florida. Only wish we had more time to spend together. We will always remember your easy going manner and smile.

    Until we all meet again,

    Cookie & Rick

George, I haven't turned off your medication alarms on my phone yet. The alarm goes off four times a day and each time it does I say outloud (or to myself if others are around): "Hon you don't have to take these meds anymore...YOU'RE FREE! You're out of pain and there's no more clouds and no more confusion. And for that I am deeply grateful! But I miss you so very much! We truly tried to "love one another as He loved us" in the 49 years we were together. There are few regrets and so many wonderful memories! Watch over us all, Hon! Until we're back together again, know that I love you with all my heart. Rest in peace. - Your Linny
