Obituary

George Arthur Place went home to be with his LORD and Savior Dec. 28, 2021. He was born in Fulton, NY July 23rd, 1944 to George A. and Mary Ann Place. He graduated in 1963 from Cortland High School, Cortland NY. He owned Performance Automotive, which was well known in the Cortland area. He had a lifelong love of NHRA Drag Racing.

He and his partners set a national NHRA record in 1970 with their 1955 Chevy going on to compete at the 1970 World Finals. He raced a 1969 Chevy Camaro, “The Mousetrap”, that he was very proud of.

George was a District Sales Manager for Combined Life Insurance of NY. He married Joyce Perkins in 1985. They moved to Florida in 1991, finally settling in Dunnellon in 1998. George held various sales positions before starting his own power generation business, Eagle Generator, in Dunnellon.

Upon retiring in 2012 he renewed his love of old cars and trucks, motorcycles and camping. He enjoyed spending summers in upstate New York with family and friends. George had many friends that he kept in contact with through the internet. He was an active member of Riverland Baptist Church of Dunnellon for more than 20 years. Throughout this time he was under the ministry of Rex Carringer who was not only his Pastor but also his friend.

George was greatly loved and will be immensely missed. He loved his family, especially his beloved grandkids. He loved spending time with his dogs Toby, Penni, Blue and Princess. They were an important part of his life.

He is survived by his wife Joyce, daughter Theresa (Steve) Crandall, grandchildren, Jason Knecht (Diana), Steven (Emily) Crandall, Ariel Crandall (Michael) and Sydney Crandall. Sisters-in-law Carolyn Place, Alice Muncy, Joan Brayton, Arlen (David) Withey, brothers-in-law, James (Peggy) Perkins, Donnie (Cyndy) Perkin’s and half sisters, Arlene Tedesco and Aileen Long, special cousin, Carol Blue, special nephew, Donnie (Kelley) Muncy, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

George was predeceased by his parents George A. Sr. and Mary Ann Place, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Rowland and Norma Perkins, his brothers, Ronald Place and Donald Place, and his sister, Lola Mumbulo, and his brothers-in-law, Charles Perkins, Don (Joan) Brayton, and Don (Alice) Muncy.

Please join the family for a memorial Service to celebrate George’s life, to be held at Riverland Baptist Church, 19455 SW 61st St. Dunnellon, FL 34432 on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at 2:00PM. .

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Riverland Baptist Church of Dunnellon, or a charity of your choice in his honor.

His family would like to thank the staff at Legacy House Ocala who compassionately and lovingly cared for him in his final days.
