Obituary

George (Big George as he was known) passed away after a long illness in New Smyrna Beach, FL. Anyone who knew him remembered his laugh and his booming voice.

He grew up in New Bedford, MA near the beach and attended New Bedford High School. His father and uncle were in WWII; Uncle George Adams died in Normandy and has a memorial in his name in New Bedford, MA. George enlisted in the Marines in his senior year of high school; discharged honorably in May 1964, including service in the Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba.

He was always a hard worker. Began working in the new field of data processing for Gulf and Western in New Bedford. Worked there for 20 years and then worked for 20 years in many different managerial capacities for AT&T in Fairhaven, MA, Maitland, FL and Lake Mary FL. Had many friends with whom he played basketball and volleyball, with some social time after the games. Followed his children at Dartmouth High at all sporting and music events. Moved from MA to FL in 1986. Took care of his wife who was often infirm until his own infirmity and surgical accident in 2008. Retired in 2003 and loved spending time with his three young grandchildren. Lived on the beach for several years, and then moved to his home on the golf course where he played 3-4 times weekly. He and his wife were former members of the Sugar Mill Country Club. He passed peacefully in a nursing home across the street from the beach.

He was predeceased by his father Fred Darwell in May 1986; mother Eleanor Adams Darwell in October 1988; and his wife Rosemarie E. Darwell in September 2012. Survived by his daughter Donna Zeh (Steve) in FL; son Jeff Darwell (Kristie), also in FL; three grandchildren: Duncan Traver, Ava Zeh and Amelia Zeh; niece Mary Ellen Mason (Canada) and nephews David Mason (Boston MA), Gerard Mason (Plymouth MA), Bryan Joseph (Newport RI) and Jason Darwell (NH). His brother Barry Darwell lives in New Bedford, MA.

He will be remembered always, but there will be a memorial service at Baldwin Brothers at 1:30pm on Sunday October 25, 2015 at One North Causeway in New Smyrna Beach, FL. Friends and family are welcome to the service, refreshments after the ceremony.

I shared many good times with George in the Fairhaven Data Center. He was a trusted and talented co-worker and more than that, a friend. My prayers and best wishes to the family and close friends! May he rest in peace!

My condolences. I am very sorry for the loss of George. Revelation 21:4 tells us: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”
