George F. “Pete” Tyrrell, 82, of New Smyrna Beach passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2011. Beloved husband, father and grandfather, Pete was born Nov. 22, 1928 in Providence, RI and grew up in Pawtucket, RI. He was the youngest of six children. Pete graduated from Brown University in 1950, where he was a starting guard on the basketball team. Upon graduation he served in US Army during the Korean War. When he returned to the US, Pete began a prolific career in advertising. After this successful career, he retired from Johnson & Johnson as VP of Corporate Advertising in 1994.
Pete is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jerry, his three children, Joan Durej and her husband Ron, of Granby, CT, Jeffrey and his wife Maureen of Darien, CT and son Rob, of Seattle, WA. Also surviving are five grandchildren and three older sisters, Louise and her husband Hank, Betsy and her husband Bob, and Ruth. Pete is also survived by a brother-in-law, Steve Hunt, of Chicago, IL, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Jim and sister Justine.
Pete was an active philanthropist and an exceptionally gifted story teller. His warm heart, generous spirit and sense of humor will be remembered and treasured by all who knew him.
Per his wishes, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his memory to your favorite charity.
Baldwin Brothers Cremation Society 1 North Causeway New Smyrna Beach FL 32169 is in charge of arrangements.
The family respectfully requests memorial donations be made in George's name to the chartiy of your choice.
Memorial Funeral Mass will be private for the family only at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church New Smyrna Beach.
