Obituary

George Sears Greene, age 86, died peacefully on September 30, 2023 in England at the end of a cruise.  He is survived by his beloved wife Donna of 63 years, his son Kevin (Julie), his son Kenneth (Kristin) and daughter Karen “Kady” Wright (Jay) and eight grandchildren—Sean (Yasmin), Brandon, Sarah, Holly, Amelia, Julia, Tara and Valerie, as well as his brothers Donald and Henry. He is  preceded in death by his parents George and Stella Greene and brother Robert.

George was born September 27, 1937 in Hackensack, NJ to parents George Sears Greene and Stella Albrise Greene. He attended high school in Bogota, NJ where he was a scholar, a varsity football and basketball player and voted the graduate with the best smile.  He graduated from Rutgers University summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a B.S. in chemistry followed by a B.S. in meteorology from the University of Utah via the United States Air Force.

He married Donna, the love of his life, in 1960.  They lived on Okinawa for three and a half years where George proudly served his country as an Air Force officer working in the air weather unit.   After being honorably discharged as a captain in the USAF, George attended and graduated from Purdue University with a Ph.D. in organic chemistry.  He had many satisfying years working as a research chemist, ending his career as a director of research. He had a questioning mind and was a keen student of history. He was a member of The American Chemical Society and Milton United Methodist Church.  He and Donna lived for almost 30 years in Oak Ridge, NJ where they happily raised their three amazing children.  George was involved in coaching some of his sons’ baseball and basketball activities, served as a Webelo cub scout leader and United Methodist youth group leader and also attended many of his daughter’s dance recitals.  In 2002 George and Donna moved to Las Vegas where retirement afforded them the opportunity to make new friends and engage in a variety of community social activities.

George enjoyed board games, pickle ball, rock hunting, hiking and traveling.  His greatest passion was his family:  he was seldom far from his wife, was so very proud of his three children and grateful for his eight grandchildren.  He moved to The Villages, FL in 2017 to be nearer family and was blessed by many happy family get-togethers.  His vibrant laugh and sense of humor will be missed by family and friends.

A memorial service for family and friends, officiated by Rev. Ellen Pollock is scheduled for 11:00 A.M. on Saturday November 18, 2023 at New Covenant United Methodist Church, 3470 Woodridge Dr. The Villages, FL followed by a Celebration of Life at Eisenhower Rec Center 3560 Buena Vista Blvd The Villages, FL.
