Obituary
George O. McNeill, 85, of Ormond Beach, Florida, passed away on July 27, 2021.
He was born on December 10, 1935, in Jersey City, New Jersey, the son of George McNeill and Gladys J. McNeill of Kearny, New Jersey. He graduated from Kearny High School as Valedictorian of his class, He graduated from Upsala College in East Orange, New Jersey in 1958, where he was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate with the highest honors. During his college days, he was president of his college fraternity, Theta Epsilon.
He was an entrepreneur and owned Yeakel McNeill, Inc., General Contractors and Associated Products Company that installed septic tanks and rented barricades and signs for highway construction. He also owned the McNeill Builders and was sales manager for Gingrich Memorials for 14 years. All his businesses were located in Mechanicsburg, PA, where he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Associated Builders and Contractors.
George was the beloved husband of Elaine M. McNeill for 60 years. They enjoyed traveling together, going on cruises, and entering photo contests.
George is survived by a son, Michael G. McNeill, and his wife Lori Leisloft McNeill, and 3 grandchildren, Dillon (24), Abby (21), and Ethan (19), and by a daughter, Kelly Sherbo, and her husband Mike Sherbo, of Carlisle, PA, and 2 grandchildren, Christopher and Brandon of Washington, D.C. He is also survived by his sister, Carolee, and her husband Stephen Gottlieb of Hillsborough, NJ.
George was a longtime member of the Keystone Appaloosa Horse Club and showed Appaloosa horses for over 15 years and became a horse show judge. He was also a 4H leader for the Cumberland County 4H Horse and Pony Club. Another activity he loved was coaching soccer for Hampton Township in Pennsylvania.
He was inducted into the Kearny High School Sports Hall of Fame lettering in 3 sports: football, soccer, and indoor track. In retirement, he was a two-time gold medal winner in the Florida Senior Games in tennis in Ormond Beach.
He enjoyed art and painting and was a member of the Palette and Brush Club of the Halifax area and the Mechanicsburg Art Club in PA.
George was an avid bicyclist and belonged to Harrisburg Bike Club for many years. He enjoyed fly fishing for trout and was a member of the Yellow Breeches Trout Club. He also wrote articles on fly fishing called “The Fly Box” which were published in the Yellow Breeches Anglers Newsletter for many years. He was also a fly fishing guide in central Pennsylvania.
Services will be private at Longsdorf Cemetery in Mechanicsburg, PA at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to The Palette and Brush Club c/o Maurine Larkin, 4 Monterey Circle, Ormond Beach, Florida 32176.
